For its second album, 1997's BEVERLEY ATONALE, this band from the Marlborough Farms area of Brooklyn shifted directions considerably from its debut. Though the lyrics of songs like "Rushes of Pure Spring" and "Music for Tennis Courts" continue the Brooklyn-specific references and band autobiography of the group's first album, MARLBOROUGH FARMS, the tunes are considerably prettier, recalling such orchestral-pop forefathers as Van Dyke Parks and Richard Davies. Singer Gary Olson's vocals are often mixed lower than the gentle instrumentation, giving songs like the almost childlike "Windy" a hauntingly dreamlike quality. The close harmonies of sibling guitarists Jeff and Jennifer Baron support Olson's intimate vocals in much the same way that their gliding acoustic and gentle electric guitars support his piano and organ, with the subtle percussion of drummer Ed Powers providing just enough support to keep the whole from floating away entirely. An entirely charming and delightful album.
The Ladybug Transistor includes: Jeff Baron, Jennifer Baron (guitar); Ed Powers (drums); Gary Olson.
Personnel: Jennifer Baron (vocals); Jeff Baron (guitar); Gary Olson (keyboards); Ed Powers (drums).
Alternative Press (5/97, p.73) - 5 (out of 5) - "...[A] 37-minute album that sustains its lazy, hazy mood without repeating itself, and within a short song structure that pushes the boundaries of pop while maintaining melody and drive..." Option (5-6/97, p.113) - "...variously recalling groups like Butterglory, Small Factory....there are definite threads reaching back to the heights of the Beach Boys and long-gone AM radio transmissions, with horns and pianos often sharing center stage with guitars and drums..." $12.65 Taurus Smith AKA AtonementBorn in 1978 on the south side of Chicago IL. He is the son of Laura and Sam Smith and the youngest of three brothers and sisters. Taurus lived a very difficult and challenging life, being diagnosed with chronicle glaucoma at the age of 6 months. Losing his sight at the age of 10 Taurus experienced much discrimination, sympathy and very little understanding from society. It was at the age of 13 when things seemed to begin to turn around for Taurus, this is when he discovered writing rhymes. As he would rap about sex, money and drugs it seemed to get him popularity with the guys and impressed the girls. But this was just a small population and it didn’t compare with the mass of people that didn’t know that he could rap or didn’t care and treated him as if he was helpless or retarded. This is what bothers Taurus the most because it ...
