It's unclear exactly who fostered the misconception that Lambchop was some kind of alt-country band, but it's an inexplicable notion that will be immediately be dispelled upon listening to WHAT ANOTHER MAN SPILLS (or any of their other albums, for that matter). Closer in spirit to the Tindersticks than Son Volt, the band uses lush orchestrations that include strings, woodwind, vibes and pedal steel to support main songwriter Kurt Wagner's strange, understated vocals and quirky, poetic, often humorous lyrics. Unlike Tindersticks, Pinetop Seven, Willard Grant Conspiracy, etc., Lambchop has enough light-heartedness in their work to keep things from getting morose. An unexpected new development here is a newfound sense of funk, exemplified by the Curtis Mayfield cover "Give Me Your Love," complete with wah-wah guitar and blaxploitation-style strings.

What Another Man Spills CD music
$16.45 It was 2002 when Shawn and Seth asked me to produce this album. Theyhad harbored rock-star dreams since their college days together andhad a batch of songs ready to roll with more coming every day. Theonly problem? They were not musicians. They gave me a tape and asked me to be their band. I said I'd listenand think about it. The tape, recorded a capella in the break room atSeth's work, made a couple things clear. One: in addition to not beingmusicians, they were not singers. Two: in spite of it all, they hadsome great, fun songs. I invited them into the studio to talk about itand they barreled in, full of braggadocio and naiveté and enthusiasm. They wanted a full-blown production, a kind of "Simon and Garfunkelmeets Toad the Wet Sprocket." They wanted rock, and they wanted me toplay all the instruments. I didn't even own an electric guitar. Itwould be a learning experience for us all.As I put the finishing touches on this project it's hard to believethe changes ...
