| | Ladybug Transistor Albemarle Sound CD Ladybug Transistor Discography of CDs
By borrowing from the classic conceptual pop albums of the late sixties for their latest offering, Brooklyn's Ladybug Transistor have ended up crafting a late-20th century gem that will most certainly be remembered as one of 1999's most outstanding releases. With housemate Bill Wells helping out behind the boards, the backing tracks of THE ALBERMARLE SOUND could easily be mistaken for lost PET SOUNDS instrumentals. The variety of instruments, all utilized in a contained, precise manner, are so perfectly chosen that it's easy let the sounds slip past without truly appreciating each song's construction.
Horns, strings, and Jeffrey Baron's wide-ranging guitar work combine to create a lush, sprawling background for singer Gary Olson's double-layered, crooning vocals. The real star of this disc, however, is Sasha Bell, whose piano and keyboard work (not to mention harmonies) shifts with each tempo change and elevates the album to a new plateau. Not a conceptual record in the literal sense, the abundant lyrical references to various forms of water keeps the album loosely unified with a vocabulary of images. The result of this imagery, when combined with the soothing melodies and timeless production value, is an uplifting, hopeful record appropriate for any mood.

Mojo (Publisher) (9/99, p.102) - "...the attention to detail is admirable....The Transistor's trumpet and flute-drenched onslaught has a certain callow charm." Ladybug Transistor Albemarle Sound Songs Albemarle Sound Review

| | Godspeed You Black Emperor F# A# (Infinity) CD (1998)
Albemarle Sound CD music
$11.89 "We are trapped in the belly of this horrible machine, and the machine is bleeding to death." Few albums begin with such promise and foreboding, but this first full-length from Canadian genius collective Godspeed You Black Emperor! succeeds in the first few moments. F# A# (Infinity) contains three compositions that run the gamut from grotesque to sublime. The term "composition" seems an appropriate one to use as this band does not write songs. Each piece is at least 14 minutes in length, consisting of three to four sections. The band, a nine-member unit consisting of guitar, drums, bass, strings, keyboard, marimbas, and woodwinds, intersperses voice-over narrative with sprawling instrumental melodies. The arrangements move slowly, building from hushed silence to cathartic crescendo and back again. The narratives that accompany the music meditate on the corruption of the American government and the seeming emptiness of the postmodern era. At times, it seems that the music might offer hope, but alternatively, the haunting melodies can serve to emphasize the confusion ...
| | Wilco Summerteeth CD (1999)
Albemarle Sound music CDs
$9.89 Moving beyond A.M.'s Uncle Tupelo-oriented country-rock, Wilco's double-length BEING THERE explored the sonic vistas of the Stones and Big Star. SUMMER TEETH takes things a step further. A loose, inspired masterwork of rootsy power-pop in the grand mid-'70s tradition, it's the greatest album Alex Chilton never made. With perfect pop melodies and a knack for throwing things askew via left-field sonic elements, this is as far from the country as Wilco could be.
Jeff Tweedy's ragged-but-right voice is the essence of rock & roll--the travails detailed in the lyrics seem undeniably his own. Though his days of paying homage to ...

$10.79 A duo of Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss (who also drums in the acclaimed Olympia punk band Sleater-Kinney), Quasi is one of the most unique bands in the late 90's indie scene. Most of their songs find Coomes on keyboards and lead vocals and Weiss behind the drums, although both take turns on guitar. Their songs belong to ...

Since 1993's BLACK RIDER album consisted of music written by Waits and William Burroughs to accompany a Robert Wilson play, hard-liners consider '92's BONE MACHINE to be the last "official" Waits album before the seven-year wait that ended with the release of MULE VARIATIONS. Unsurprisingly, Waits lives up to the expectations engendered by that lengthy wait. In fact, there are more stylistic threads connecting ...
