| | Superchunk CD Superchunk Discography of CDs
This self-titled debut from Chapel Hill's finest proves that Superchunk's fledgling material is just as satisfyingly ambiguous as the group's more polished later albums. While the shouted vocals on a track like "Sick to Move" might remind one of the work of other artists, the song never explicitly reveals its influences. SUPERCHUNK reveals a group firmly establishing itself as the sole practitioner of an idiosyncratic genre of indie rock. "Swinging" and "My Noise" are good examples of the power of Superchunk's spell, and "Slack Motherfucker," perhaps the best song ever written about menial labor, is the icing on the cake. SUPERCHUNK is a great collection for neophytes and old fogies alike.

Spin (2/91) - "Sing-along choruses, scratchy vocals, relationship problems, and loud guitars...Superchunk spices up the usual recipe of melodic emotional punk rock with an occasional speed-metal ascending chord progression, pulling off the trick of sounding fresh and smart in a familiar genre." | | Rolling Stones Still Life (American Concert 1981) CD (1982) Reissue; Remastered
Superchunk
$7.96 By the early '80s, the Rolling Stones were one of the last remaining groups leftover from the original "British Invasion" two decades prior. One of the main reasons for this was the Stones' ability to keep pace with the musical climate of the time, without losing any of their original blues-sleaze. Their 1982 live set (fourth overall) STILL LIFE, was taken from performances from their hugely successful U.S. tour a year before, when Mick, Keith and company headlined the biggest outdoor stadiums and vast arenas.
Although it lacks the youthful and unpredictable energy of their earlier concert albums (namely 1970's GET YER YA YA'S OUT), STILL LIFE showed that the Stones still had plenty of gas ...

| | Rush Working Men CD (2009)
Superchunk
$14.30 Rush is no stranger to best-of compilation albums, they've released a slew of them. They are also no stranger to DVDs. To mark their 35th anniversary, they've released Working Men, which is both; it marks their first best-of live compilation exclusively from the DVD sets Rush in Rio (2003), R30 (2005), and Snakes & Arrows Live (2008). There is also an unreleased cut from R30 -- a killer version of One Little Victory. While fans may simply regard this as a record company cash grab, hardcore fans know how closely Rush monitors each release and controls all aspects of their career. On hearing these tracks without benefit of the visuals, it becomes lucidly clear that in the 21st century, Rush plays more like a hungry act looking to prove themselves rather than as seasoned veterans jaded by the entire business. The instrumental interaction between Neal Peart, Alex Lifeson, and Geddy Lee is utterly uncanny, the anticipation and the willingness to add flourishes and to challenge one another in the bridges and solo sections reveal their command of the material and their empathies for one another's playing strengths. One of the more revealing things on a live record such as this one is the sophistication in Lee's vocal delivery now that his singing voice has deepened with age. The only time on the entire disc when it doesn't entirely work is when he tries to recapture his old, piercing caterwaul on 2112, but ...
| | Megadeth Endgame CD (2009)
Superchunk
$15.65 The release of 2009's ENDGAME brings with it a startling realization: if first-generation thrash metal fans had been polled about which of the genre's "Big Four" -- Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth -- would prove to be the most resilient and consistently prolific over the next quarter century, the only sure-fire consensus would probably have been "well, anyone but Megadeth!" And yet, 12 studio albums and 150-plus songs later -- more than any of the other three have managed -- that's exactly what's come to pass. The group's second release for Roadrunner, whose title apparently refers to "coming full circle" rather than any sort of goodbye, finds the latest iteration of Megadeth-- debuting new guitarist Chris Broderick(ex-Nevermore, Jag Panzer)--working primarily within their technical thrash comfort zone (think PEACE SELLS through RUST IN PEACE), with ...
| | Plastikman Artifakts CD (1998) BC
Superchunk
$11.19 His fourth album chronologically, ARTIFAKTS conceptually falls between his second and third albums. It represents the completion of material left unfinished when he was barred from entering the US for performing illegally and subsequently cut off from releasing material through his Detroit-based label Plus 8. The result is similar to CONSUMED in that it transforms the constantly mutating 303 synth lines of Acid house into abstract forms more at home alongside Tangerine Dream than on the platter of a DJ's turntable.
Anyone who has followed the evolution of ...
| | A-Ha Scoundrel Days CD (1986) England
Superchunk
$10.49 Out of print in the U.S.! Scoundrel Days was the Norwegian trio's sophomore album, originally released in 1986. For anyone expecting a repeat of their debut album (and it's hit single 'Take On Me') were surprised to find a darker, moodier beast altogether. Scoundrel Days that seemed to shake off the bubblegummy Synthpop sound of their debut and replace it with an equally melodic batch of eclectic tracks that relied heavily on atmosphere. Features the singles 'Cry Wolf', 'I've Been Losing You' and 'Manhattan Skyline'.
While not quite as strong as the band's debut, Scoundrel Days is still a-ha succeeding as a marketed "pretty boy" band which can connect musically and lyrically as much as any musical sacred cow. The opening two songs alone make for one of the best one-two opening punches around: the tense edge of the title track, featuring one of Morten Harket's soaring vocals during the chorus and a crisp, pristine punch in the music, and "The Swing of Things," a moody, elegant number with a beautiful synth/guitar arrangement (plus some fine drumming courtesy of studio pro Michael Sturgis) and utterly lovelorn lyrical sentiments that balance on the edge of being overheated without quite going over. Although the rest of the disc never quite hits as high as the opening, it comes close more often than not. A definite downturn is the band's occasional attempts to try and prove themselves as a "real" band ...
