Though a world and several decades removed from the late-'60s coterie of the British Isles' Incredible String Band or the West Coast hippie-freak circle of Father Yod's YaHoWa 13, Tokyo's nomadic Ghost collective earnestly rekindles the flame of bell-bottomed, communal psychedelia. At the same time, Ghost conjures the spirits of Germany's Amon Dnnl (I and II), creating a fantastically time-warped, cross-cultural patchwork of acoustic, electric, and traditional acid folk-rock.

Enigmatic leader Masaki Batoh delivers coarsely accented and broken English lyrics as recorders, guitars, and joyfully sloppy drumming carry him away on the incense-scented whirlwinds of "Guru in the Echo." On "Moungod Asleep," "Rakshu," and "Sun Is Tangging," Ghost abandons itself to the playful wiles of ISB cohorts Dr. Strangely Strange and C.O.B. The lamasery chants of "Moungod Tedeum" and "Moungod Rediant Youth" betray Ghost's Eastern origins, but an unmistakable Teutonic influence still permeates the group's instrumental improvisations. Michio Kurihara's fluttering electric guitar solo rises from the acoustic bed of "I've Been Flying" like Batoh's astrally detached anima. But it is "Ballad of Summer Rounder," a fragile, Galaxie 500-ish strum-along that escalates into ESP Records-worthy free jazz-flavored psycho-saxual delirium and fluting frenzy, that marks Ghost as a fascinating, unpredictable, and thoroughly contemporary psych outfit.

What's My Favorite Word?
Too Short What's My Favorite Word? CD  (2002) Edited

Ghost Soundtrack songs
CD $7.69  3 stars Audio Samples
The original hip-hop pimp's 2002 offering finds the seemingly indefatigable hustla up to his usual tricks. True to form, Too Short delivers some of the nastiest, most graphically sexual raps around, detailing his fixation on the pimp lifestyle. Throughout the album, he makes sure that not a word of his pornographic commentary is lost, delivering his raps in a deliberate, unhurried manner. Musically, Too Short offers relief from the sound-alike production of too many of his contemporaries, with the burbling, '70s-style funk of "Get that Cheese" and the organic, dark-hued old-school R&B feel of "That's Right," complete with the requisite Bernie Worrell-style synth tones. Too Short refuses to paint himself as a victim of the ghetto, opening his playa manifesto "Pimp Life" by proudly declaring "I chose this life," and comparing his carnal exploits with the infamous sexual misadventures of Bill Clinton on the opening cut "Triple X." Similarly, he offers positive advice to his brethren, advising them elsewhere to "free your mind if it's trapped in the streets" and to "hold onto your dreams." All this pro-activity doesn't dull his hardcore edge, though; unsurprisingly, he's not above such prurient scenarios as the girl-on-girl action depicted in no uncertain terms on "She Loves Her." Ever since Too Short returned from his brief retirement in 1999 with Can't Stay Away, he's sounded increasingly comfy with letting his supporting cast flavor his albums, and What's My Favorite Word? is no different. Short invites his usual guests -- longtime Cali standbys Ant Banks, E-40, and B-Legit; Atlanta rabble-rouser Lil' Jon; and the one and only George Clinton -- along with a few surprise ones: Twista, Petey Pablo, Big Gipp, and U.G.K. members Bun B and Pimp C. This lively cast of characters certainly colors the album and makes it ...

Fine Time
Chase Hamblin Fine Time CD  (2009)

Ghost Soundtrack album
CD $8.55
Chase Hamblin's A Fine Time EP somehow bridges the gap between the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and the late orchestral work of Elliott Smith, without all the suicidal tendencies. The five-song release really is a marvel to listen to, sounding like George Martin or Jon Brion themselves were behind the boards. Hamblin's reedy voice reminds us of one of the Davies brothers in the Kinks (we're not sure which), and it settles in swimmingly with each of the tracks on this debut release. It comes off more as a mini greatest-hits collection from some long-lost Donovan acolyte than the first solo effort of the former Penny Royal and current Picture Book front man. People talk about twee H-pop being the next wave in Houston, but it's folks like Hamblin, Robert Ellis and Tyagaraja who are doing the coolest and weirdest stuff.___Craig Hlavaty, Rocks OffThe cover gives it away. Chase Hamblin's debut EP, A Fine Time, is steeped in 60s/70s trippy pop. At one end of the spectrum it channels 60s revivalists like El Goodo, but at the other end it recalls more modern artists such as Elliott Smith and Grandaddy. The title track is a tour-de-force, melodic in a Beatlesque way but with enough twists and turns and bells and whistles to reward multiple listens. "Think of the Good Times" starts out with some bossanova and then segues into what sounds like the soundtrack to a hip late 60's film. "Never Let You Go" sounds like a Zombies/Animals hybrid, and the joyous pop of "We're Gonna Make It" and the "Hey Jude"-like "Bye Bye" close this extraordinary debut EP out. "Chase" this one down.____Absolute PowerpopChase Hamblin was surely dropped here from another era. He sings about love and hope surrounded by bouncy circus melodies; he has a high voice that male singers these days don’t often cultivate; he covers his thin frame in artfully chosen thrift-store clothes; and he admits to feeling a kinship ...
