Surging electric guitar riffs and powerful drums mark the sound of "Work Hard/Play Hard," "Cat's Blues" and others. The downcast folk-poet sound of yore isn't entirely absent though, as evidenced by the touching, romantic ballad "We All, Us Three, Will Ride" and the poignant, countryish "New Partner." A well-balanced album, and one of the finest in the Palace catalog.

Perhaps inspired by producer Steve Albini, Will Oldham turned up the volume on VIVA LAST BLUES, the hardest-rocking album in the Palace canon. Picking up on the thread of the AN ARROW THROUGH THE BITCH EP, Oldham dives headlong into the Neil Young/Crazy Horse sound that's always been a stylistic guidepost to the work of the band.

Palace Music: Will Oldham (vocals, guitar); Bryan Rich (guitar); Liam Hayes (piano, organ); Ned Oldham (bass, slide guitar, background vocals); Jason Loewenstein (drums, background vocals).

Spin (12/95, p.123) - 8 - Very Good - "...Oldham's tunes are lovely and thorny, a bible-belt punk response to PJ Harvey's brimstone tangos....purer and wilder than any previous Palace outing....Palace leaves lo-fi country the way Elizabeth Taylor leaves husbands--proving one way to do something new is to hunker down and become weirdly, deeply more of what you already are."
Q (9/95, p.118) - 3 Stars - Good - "...Oldham is sometimes artfully artless, there's coherence to this reworking of the restless spirit of country blues..."
Melody Maker (12/23-30/95, pp.66-67) - Ranked #30 on Melody Maker's list of 1995's `Albums Of The Year.'
Melody Maker (8/12/95, p.34) - Recommended - "...the purest country I've heard since the Cowboy Junkies, but as spare as that band were ornate....Albini's production is pivotal...lending their unassuming strummings a powerful presence without requiring them to resort to the risible, c**try-rock, fiddly f***ery of `Comes A Time'..."
NME (Magazine) (12/23-30/95, pp.22-23) - Ranked #50 in NME's `Top 50 Albums Of The Year' for 1995.
NME (Magazine) (8/19/95, p.49) - 8 (out of 10) - "...[Will Oldham] has expanded his sound--previously shaky, fragmented meta-country--to a richer mix of strafed and plucked guitars, jagged pianos and humming synths....his trademark croaking voice has strengthened....surreal, allusive and crookedly beautiful..."

Love Without Trust
Ken Saydak Love Without Trust CD  (2001)

Viva Last Blues
CD $12.29  Audio Samples
Where the guitarless Foolish Man made Saydak's Otis Spann-influenced piano the axis around which everything else revolved, Love Without Trust places the veteran sideman in the center of a full band. The more fleshed-out treatment gives him the flexibility to try new things -- witness the grace with which he appropriates Bob Dylan's hard-driving blues shuffle "Watching the River Flow" -- but it also seems to have instilled in him a tendency toward overly obvious arrangements. Interesting ideas are confounded by generic execution, resulting in songs that work better on paper than on disc. The title cut, for example, sets up an intriguing scenario of the sort not often explored in popular song, but ends up squandering it with female duet vocals that very predictably trade off with Saydak's own. To be fair, not every track is overpowered by that kind of calculated slickness; the jazzy, philosophical "Expressions of Tenderness" shows that Saydak is still one ...
Blue Note Plays The Beatles
Blue Note Plays The Beatles CD  (2004)

Viva Last Blues
CD $9.15  Audio Samples
Blue Note Plays the Beatles contains 11 previously released performances by jazz artists dipping into the Lennon/McCartney songbook. When deciding to cover such well-known songs, an artist has two possible ways of going about it: either re-create the track with no challenge to the original or attempt the complete opposite. Falling into the first category are "I've Just Seen a Face" by Holly Cole, "And I Love Her" by Kevin Hays, and "Come Together" by Dianne Reeves and Cassandra Wilson with Bob Belden. These are straightforward, enjoyable re-creations, but add nothing new to the originals. The second category is represented by the two strongest tracks on Blue Note Plays the Beatles: Bobby McFerrin's overdubbed a cappella "Drive My Car" and Grant Green's funk attack on "A Day in the Life." Both artists truly pay homage to the Beatles' creativity by breathing new life into these universally acclaimed tracks. Grant Green especially transforms "A Day in the Life" into a funk groove that completely sidesteps the majestic, string-laden, hallucinogenic cacophony that was the hallmark of the song. Overall, Blue Note Plays the Beatles is similar to the best of the Fab Four's original albums: wonderful middle-of-the-road material mixed with a few timeless oddities that should please both jazz heads and Beatles fans. ~ Al Campbell Stanley Turrentine/Lee Morgan/ Buddy Rich/Grant Green/Bobby M Recording information: Chez Club, Los Angeles, CA (09/04/1964-12/22/1996); Clinton Recording, New York, NY (09/04/1964-12/22/1996); Los Angeles, CA (09/04/1964-12/22/1996); Songshop Studios, New York, NY (09/04/1964-12/22/1996); ...
