(1 Customer Review)
On their sophomore release, Skag Heaven, Squirrel Bait not only continued with the hard rockin' punk sound of their debut, but improved on it with better material and performances. Peter Searcy's speed grit vocals, David Grubbs' dirty, Van Halenesque guitar attack, and Ben Daughtrey's varied and tight drumming all sound more polished here, especially on the locomotive, punk metal driven tracks "Kid Dynamite" and "Virgil's Return," as well as on the relatively straightforward thrash number "Kick the Cat." Newfound melodic touches appear too on "Black Light Poster Child" and the Phil Ochs' cover "Tape from California," along with tempo shifts which punctuate the dark drama of "Choose Your Poison" and "Short Straw Wins." If Squirrel Bait had not disbanded after Skag Heaven, it's hard to say if their intense sound would have continued to benefit from the expanded songwriting sensibilities. With their small but potent output, though, Squirrel Bait did help reconcile punks to the hard rock they were supposed to hate by demonstrating, along with metal camp sympathizers Metallica, that the two styles are linked through a shared love of alienation driven intensity. Look for used copies of the out of print Homestead two-fer for all the band's indie rock lessons. ~ Stephen Cook

The Backstreet Boys self-titled 1997 debut album endeared the group to millions of teens and pre-teens with its radio-friendly blend of pop harmonies and danceable beats. MILLENNIUM finds the Boys in the unenviable position of following up the mind-blowing success of the first album. Less ambitious artists might wither under such pressure, but the Backstreet Boys beat the dreaded sophomore slump in style. In the tradition of the debut, the album is a combination of romantic ballads guaranteed to make your little sister ...

With her third album, FAITH, Faith Hill tasted pop crossover success--and she evidently liked the taste. BREATHE, Hill's fourth release, takes the pop/country stylings of FAITH to the next level. It's an appealing collection of pop, gospel, R&B, rock, and ballads, with just a bit of country thrown in. The production, featuring Hill's big voice surrounded by booming drums and screaming guitars, is so slick you could skate on it.

$12.79 Both of Solomon Burke's mid-'70s Chess albums (Music to Make Love By and Back to My Roots) are on this single-disc anthology, The Chess Collection, along with a couple of non-LP cuts from the same era, "I'm Leaving on That Late, Late Train" and "Love's Paradise." Burke's Chess stint was an ill-fated association; Chess was on the verge of going out of business at the time, and while Burke's voice was still in form, the material was wholly inappropriate for his sensibilities. As happened to so many esteemed '60s soul vets in this era, rather than play to his strengths, the records tried to push the singer into the changing times with ...
