Thicket album
$14.69 A COLLECTION OF SONGS REPRESENTING AN ENTHUSIASM FOR RECORDING...BY AMATUERS is a CD-Extra release containing both a full audio program as well as multimedia computer files which includes the video "Unconsciously Screamin'."
Subtitled A COLLECTION OF SONGS REPRESENTING AN ENTHUSIASM FOR RECORDING...BY AMATEURS, this compilation represents some of the more interesting creative byways the Lips went down during their heyday as Okie psychedelic garage-rockers. Bizarre imagery and often out-of-tune instruments were commonplace, meaning songs such as "Jesus Shootin' Heroin" and "Bag Full Of Thoughts" can easily be mistaken for NUGGETS outtakes. Sticking to the rule of having no rules, the Lips' experimenting resulted in skewed sound collages and noisy instrumental dirges such as "Hell's Angels Cracker Factory" and "Ma I Didn't Notice."
Covering songs also became an adventure in the absurd as the Lips nonchalantly segued from Sonic ...
| | Toe 2000 CD (1999)
Thicket CD music
$11.79 It makes sense that a project including members of Tortoise would retain a bit of that band's post-rock flavor, as TOE 2000 does. This album is bound for far more than a historical footnote in the Tortoise discography though. There's a similarly atmospheric/dubby, rhythm-based approach here, but that's just the beginning of the story. Yoko Noge's post-functional singing (in ...
| | Angels Of Light New Mother CD (1999)
Thicket music CDs
$13.09 Starting with a gentle keyboard in "Fragment," which seamlessly moves into "Praise Your Name" with its piano, accordion, brushed drums, and folk/pop backing singers, Michael Gira continues with his intentional break from Swans. Anything but a softening of his art -- sample lyrics from "Praise" include "Kill idiot violence, punish greed, punish me" -- New Mother instead lets Gira experiment even further, concentrating on acoustic guitar songs accompanied by a variety of musicians. As with just about anything he tries, the results are highly individual and astonishingly good. Equally noticeable throughout the full 75-minute disc are Gira's vocals -- he's actually singing, as opposed to the brooding speak/sing of the later Swans years. While he's no Scott Walker (e.g., with occasional straining on the high notes), he's quite good nonetheless, further distinguishing his Angels work as being a mere continuation of his previous band. The general feel of the entire record draws on a juxtaposition of lush '60s American and European pop orchestration (the use ...

| | Bob Dylan Christmas In The Heart CD (2009)
Thicket album
$10.09 After the initial shock fades, the existence of CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART seems perhaps inevitable. After all, the thing Bob Dylan loves most of all are songs that are handed down from generation to generation, songs that are part of the American fabric, songs so common they never seem to have been written. These are the songs Dylan chooses to sing on CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART, a cheerfully old-fashioned holiday album from its Norman Rockwell-esque cover to its joyous backing vocals. Apart from the breakneck "Must Be Santa," which barrelhouses like a barroom, Dylan doesn't really reinterpret these songs as much as simply play them with his crackerjack road band, dropping in a little flair -- restoring "we'll have to muddle through somehow" to "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," singing the opening of "O Come All Ye Faithful" in its original Latin -- but never pushing tunes in unexpected directions. Many would argue having Dylan croon these carols is unexpected enough and, true, there are times his gravelly rumble is a bit pronounced, but nothing here feels ...
| | Trans-Siberian Orchestra Night Castle CDs (2009)
Thicket CD music
$11.35 NIGHT CASTLE appears just in time for the big 2009 holiday season but don't be fooled: this isn't a Christmas album, even if it's sonically indistinguishable from Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other seasonal releases, and the fact that it's been dubbed "Capra-esque" certainly brings it within the realm of the season. NIGHT CASTLE brims with all the drama, pomp, and circumstance of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other records but channeling these traits through a newly created narrative does have the effect of hearing it in a somewhat new light, shifting the focus entirely to the band's attack, not melody. Still, there's ...

Thicket CD music
$13.85 This pleasant, melodic compilation blends pop and progressive rock with James Hopkins Harrison's vocals, which range from raspy to high-pitched. This CD combines the band's first and third albums (Lake and Paradise Island, respectively), and includes the hits "On the Run," "Into the Night," "Final Curtain" and "Time Bomb," all of which received FM radio airplay in the late '70s. ~ Gina Boldman

| | Fairytales Can Come True: U.K. Popsych From The Late 60'S CD (2007) (Import) United Kingdom
Thicket music CDs
$15.89 The idea of this compilation is to present obscure British recordings from the late '60s that had a definite psychedelic feel, but also had a lot of harmony pop influence at work as well. Often this led to a particularly precious branch of psychedelia dubbed (long after the fact) by some collectors as "toytown" music, in part because of a preoccupation with British character sketches, childhood nostalgia, and fantasy that was largely absent from American psychedelic rock. There's some of that here, but fortunately this largely steers clear of excessively precious and twee material, though some of it does have the good-time bounce that leaked down to so many bands from the circa-1967 Beatles and Kinks. None of these were hits or anything close to it, of course, but some general '60s collectors might actually recognize some of the musicians, particularly the Searchers (represented by a fairly respectable, and seldom anthologized, late-'60s 45, "Umbrella Man"); Jackie Lomax, as leader of the Lomax Alliance; Los Bravos, of "Black Is Black" fame (here heard covering the Easybeats' song "Bring a Little Lovin'"); Ian Matthews, heard on the Pyramid's breezy "Summer of Last Year," recorded shortly before he joined Fairport Convention; and Hedgehoppers Anonymous and the Roulettes, both of whom had a little U.K. success on record in the '60s. What's most impressive about this compilation, however, is that there's a fair amount of variety in the selections, encompassing an obscure Troggs cover (Barry Benson's "Cousin Jane"), almost raw folk-rock (Hedgehoppers Anonymous' "Daytime"), sub-Walker Brothers balladeering (the Virgil Brothers' "Look Away"), and nearly baroque moodiness with influence from both classical music and Beach Boys harmonies (Fred Lloyd's ...
