It's a truism that, with the exception of the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde and Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant, rock critics don't make good musicians. Former Pitchfork staffer Dominique Leone disproves that assertion with his self-titled debut album. Reminiscent of vintage U.K. art-pop acts like XTC, 10cc, and the Move--perverted slightly with a taste for noise and deconstruction reminiscent of the Fall--the 11 songs here are highlighted by the hypnotic 13-minute centerpiece, "The Return."
Audio Mixer: Bryan Ward.Spin (p.98) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "At the heart of these labyrinthe freak-outs are delicate songs about relationship problems sung in a bashful tenor that exposes the beauty in his beast." CMJ - "Leone's music is nearly equal parts electronic dissonance and '60s pop harmonies..." Dominique Leone Songs | 1. | Kaine |

Dominique Leone music CDs
$12.95 Starting with a gentle keyboard in "Fragment," which seamlessly moves into "Praise Your Name" with its piano, accordion, brushed drums, and folk/pop backing singers, Michael Gira continues with his intentional break from Swans. Anything but a softening of his art -- sample lyrics from "Praise" include "Kill idiot violence, punish greed, punish me" -- New Mother instead lets Gira experiment even further, concentrating on acoustic guitar songs accompanied by a variety of musicians. As with just about anything he tries, the results are highly individual and astonishingly good. Equally noticeable throughout ...

| | Suishou No Fune Prayer For Chibi CDs (2008)
Dominique Leone CD music
$14.29 Its eight tracks spread across two-hour-plus discs of sometimes difficult emotional terrain, the epic Prayer for Chibi is Suishou No Fune's widest ranging effort so far, and an unexpectedly personal release in a style not often known for its emotional heft. Chibi was the pet cat of guitarists Kageo and Pirako Kurenai, who died in February 2007. A brief and purely factual description like "Japanese psychedelic rock duo record a two-disc memorial to their deceased cat" makes Prayer for Chibi sound like fodder for a tossed-off joke in a sequel to This Is Spinal Tap, but animal lovers understand the outpouring of emotion that surrounds the death of a beloved pet, and Suishou No Fune's brand of intimate psychedelia has always been more concerned with the heart than the head. Therefore, the first disc's four tracks are lyrical in their ...

| | Grateful Dead Europe '72 CDs (1972) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Dominique Leone songs
$18.69 Originally a three-LP set, this live document of the band at their largest (an octet if you count non-performing lyricist/official member Robert Hunter) is a well-recorded portrait of one of the Dead's finest eras. The Chick Corea-channeled-through-Floyd Cramer piano of Keith Godchaux had already begun to take the Dead to new improvisational heights, but diehard bluesman Pigpen was still representing the group's roots with his harmonica and gritty vocals.
If you favor the jamming side of the Dead, EUROPE '72 offers a wealth of riches. "Morning Dew," "Truckin'" and other classics are presented in epic versions, spotlighting the musicians in all their free-form glory. But those who ...

Dominique Leone album
$38.99 The third in a series of handsome box sets, SINGLES 1968-1971 is yet another must-have for hardcore Rolling Stones fans. As with the earlier installments, the collection presents the original 45's in CD format, along with a booklet of informative liner notes, vintage photos, and promotional artwork.
Although the "Jumpin' Jack Flash" B-side, "Child of the Moon," finds the Stones still attempting to keep pace with the Beatles (the song clearly echoes Lennon/McCartney's "Rain"), the aforementioned A-side presents the group living up to their ...

| | World's Greatest Jazz Band At Manchester's Free Trade Hall, England 1971 CDs (2006)
Dominique Leone music CDs
$13.39 With an over-the-top (and perhaps tongue in cheek) name like the World's Greatest Jazz Band, all modesty has been happily tossed out the window. Whether any band can actually live up to such a title is questionable, but At Manchester's Free Trade Hall, England 1971 does qualify as a fine recording of a vivacious live show. This rather large band (nine players), including trumpeters Yank Lawson and Billy Butterfield, and pianist Ralph Sutton, turns back the clock to a jazz form -- Dixieland -- that hadn't been "in" since the 1910s. The set list, "Ain't Misbehavin'," "Carolina in the Morning," and "Bourbon Street Parade," reflects this backward glance. The odd thing about this date for anyone immersed in contemporary jazz (anything from Coltrane on) is how melodic and fun jazz was before it became sophisticated. Sutton ...

Dominique Leone songs
$11.15 Although Seattle will probably forever be musically identified with grunge, back in the early '80s, the area had its fair share of hardcore bands. Hardcore may have taken a back seat to grunge come the early to mid-'90s, but by the close of the decade, the chaps in Champion decided to resuscitate hardcore once more in the region. Over the course of four albums from 2000 through 2004, the group built a sizeable following -- especially locally -- and when they decided to call it day in early 2006, it was only fitting to end it all in their hometown, as a final sold-out show was recorded and filmed at the El Corazon ...
