| Mind-Blowing 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: Best of Diana Ross & the Supremes songs The Supremes had a lot of hits, and most of them were big, monster radio hits, heard over and over. If you get this CD and Volume 2, you will have just about every important Supremes song, including 4 made after Diana left the group. To listen to both CD's in one sitting is a mind-blowing experience. By stevenx9 (Mandeville, LA USA) |
| very good collection and get the 2nd one too 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: Best of Diana Ross & the Supremes album for sale every song is a hit--polished sound of the supremes--this CD is worth it just for the version of "someday we'll be together"--that starts off with a tambourine--the 2nd collection is very good also--the last 4 songs are the hits the supremes had when jean terrell took over lead vocals. Like any record company worth their salt, MCA knows a good gimmick when they see it, and when the millennium came around, the 20th Century Masters -- The Millennium Collection wasn't too far behind. Supposedly, the millennium is a momentous occasion, but it's hard to feel that way when it's used as another excuse to turn out a budget-line series. But apart from the presumptuous title, 20th Century Masters -- The Millennium Collection turns out to be a very good budget-line series. True, it's impossible for any of these brief collections to be definitive, but they're nevertheless solid samplers and don't feature a bad song in the bunch. For example, take Martha Reeves & the Vandellas' 20th Century volume -- it's an irresistible budget-priced summary of their prime Motown recordings. There may be a couple of noteworthy songs missing, but many of their best-known songs are here, including "Nowhere to Run," "Heatwave," "Jimmy Mack," and "Dancing in the Street." Serious fans will want something more extensive, but this is an excellent introduction for neophytes and a great sampler for casual fans, considering its length and price. That doesn't erase the ridiculousness of the series title, but the silliness is excusable when the music and the collections are good. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: Best of Diana Ross & the Supremes buy CD music This is part of MCA's 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection series.
Though they have been around for nearly 40 years, the Four Tops were never stronger than during the '60s and early '70s. With a dozen Top 20 and five Top Ten hits, the Tops were just as their name implies. As part of their Millennium Collection, Motown has selected 11 of these hits for consideration as one of the pre-eminent groups of the era. From the trademark stylings of Holland-Dozier-Holland to a tune by Smokey Robinson (who himself once considered the Tops to be "the baddest group around"), this best-of set is pretty much what it says to be. Though a cover of "If I Were a Carpenter" and a hyper-produced version of Robinson's "Still Water (Love)" may not reach the reminiscent heights of "Reach Out I'll Be There" and "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)," the Tops' devotions to originally named girls like " (Walk Away) Renee" and "Bernadette" and their tales of love wanted, won, and lost easily make them one of the best-loved groups of the last century, if not the last millennium. ~ Matthew Robinson

A very interesting best-of, if only because it also includes four tracks by the post-Diana Ross incarnation of the Supremes. This featured Jean Terrell (sister of Marvin Gaye song partner Tammi Terrell) as leader--only Mary Wilson remained from the original group.
The most notable track in this regard is "Nathan Jones," remade in the '80s by Banarama. It's a wildly imaginative psychedelic pop blues (check out the phasing on the vocals) that combines melody with mystery in a truly remarkable way. It's arguably one of the best singles released by either version of the group. That's not to stint the Ross-sung tracks here, however, particularly "Nothing But Heartaches," which remains among the most dramatic of the Supremes chart hits.
Diana Ross & The Supremes includes: Diana Ross, Cindy Birdsong, Mary Wilson, Lynda Laurence, Jean Terrell.
