Tenuous though it is, history books list it as a Marvin Gaye album. Those who did not see the film (from which this is a soundtrack) might unsuspectingly think Marvin might sing on it. In fact he does on one track, the title song. The film was another low-budget blaxploitation detective movie that fell short of both Superfly (Curtis Mayfield) and Shaft (Isaac Hayes). Musically, however, the remaining instrumental music is hard to fault, even though it sounds very much of its era. Approach with some degree of caution, but expect to be pleasantly surprised.

marvin plays it cool this soundtrack may fool you into getting it like a regular marvin gaye album but it's not. t plays it cool is real funk. the sounds of trouble man are so cool and smooth and it sounds like a jazz club or a bar. out of the 6 marvin gaye albums to own i consider that and live at the london palladium and here my dear to be classic marvin albums. when i first heard of marvin sing in the live version of distant lover, chills ran my spine. no wonder most of his stuff is sampled by other people. most people they locate records and try to sample them but this is real music with instruments and orchestras. we miss ya' the king of motown. One of the Best!! I love this soundtrak. They do not make
soundtraks like they used to. I first got this on vinyl some 30 years ago. I lost and got it back on CD. Marvin out did himself. I would have to put this one right up there with Shaft and Superfly as far as Blackexpoitation
movie sountracks go. Anyone intrested in
purchasing the movie I got a copy right
here from CD universe. Submitted by tracy.love (Cleveland, Ohio, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A fine example of Marvin's genius. An extremely underrated and overlooked item in Gaye's discography and even in the realm of the Blaxploitation soundtrack genre, "Trouble Man" showed just how focused Gaye could be when stimulated by a project. More importantly, it further established him as an accomplished musician and composer, rather than just a soulful crooner who waits for his producers to churn out singles for him.
As is often the case with many of the early 70's Blaxploitation films, the soundtrack is the jewel of the entire production; "Trouble Man" was no exception. The movie itself was a tasteless, cliché-ridden mobster flick (although Gaye himself did have a minor role in the film), and has yet to be issued in any home video format. Gaye has often stated that this was his personal favorite among his works, and given his notorious ego, it's easy to see why: all music, arrangements and production work are 100% Marvin. With the exception of the title track, Gaye uses his voice strictly as a pure instrument, his falsetto range adding shades of color to a lively and ever-changing mix. Many of the selections function as incidental music (which can be a bit frustrating without any accompanying visuals), but they're so well done here it's hard to complain. A well-balanced and consistently enjoyable effort, deserved to rank along the lines of Mayfield's "Superfly" and Hayes' "Shaft." Submitted by mrameche (Brookline, MA, USA) Was This Review Helpful?
