The very fact that Diana Ross' third album was Diana! The Original TV Soundtrack and not a full-fledged studio record was ample proof that she was more concerned with being an all-around entertainer than simply a singer. Fortunately, she was very good as an entertainer, as Diana! illustrates. True, a few moments -- namely the Bill Cosby and Danny Thomas sequences and her duets with the comedians -- fall flat without visuals, but her showtunes and covers are all quite enjoyable. Nevertheless, they can't help but be overshadowed by the Jackson 5's medley, which captures the group at their dynamic prime. Even if Diana is eclipsed on Diana!, the best moments on the record prove that she is a fine showwoman in her own right. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Coming off four Top Ten hits in three years for their group Chic, producers Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers were the hot R&B/disco team of the day when they wrote and produced Diana Ross' second album named simply diana. (The first was her 1971 TV soundtrack, Diana!.) The result was Ross' best-selling album ever, paced by her biggest singles hit yet, "Upside Down," and its Top Ten follow-up, "I'm Coming Out." For the most part, disco productions tended to emphasize the beat over the voice, and it might be argued, but for the billing, Ross had been reduced to guest vocalist on her own album. But it was exactly her struggle to retain an identity beyond the groove that made this music more compelling than Chic's records. diana marked an important comeback for Ross, who had struggled in the late '70s after the early successes of her solo career. She celebrated by leaving Motown for a six-year, five-album sojourn at RCA. ~ William Ruhlmann
Diana Ross would probably be offended by anyone who called her 1980 smash DIANA a comeback, but let's face it--after the flop of THE WIZ and the way that the disco revolution steamrollered so many of her old Motown compatriots' careers, that's exactly what it was. Wisely hooking up with Chic's Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards (both the most traditionally rooted and most fearless of the major disco-era producers), Ross sounds more forceful than she had in years--the helium-toned style of her early hits with the Supremes is worlds away from the assertive way she rips into the funky hit "Upside Down." Even better, the joyous, celebratory "I'm Coming Out" is probably the best solo track of her career, and the heartfelt "Now That You're Gone" is one of her most subtle ballads. The glossy Chic production might sound a bit dated to some ears, but it's matured much better than many similar albums of the era. Overall, this is, in many ways, Diana Ross's best solo record.Rolling Stone (9/4/03, pp.146-7) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Contrasts the Nile Rodgers-Bernard Edwards production team's original unreleased 1980 director's cut of DIANA with the more conservative mix Motown released instead....Heard now, the jazzier, more dangerous dynamism of their original mix is a prescient vision of the modern urban sound."
Q (10/99, p.160) - Included in Q Magazine's Best Motown Records Of All Time - "...a skilful, nay, glorious harnessing of Motown's presiding diva to the hip club styles of the day. She's in good voice but the real joy lies in the elegance and percussive muscle of the Chic Organisation's tunes..."
Q (4/93, p.101) - 3 Stars - Good - "...[in 1980] Diana Ross was svelte, funky, and smart enough to make an album with Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of Chic..."
Q (01/01/04, p.77) - Included in Q's "Best Re-releases of 2003" - "[A] truly sparkling slice of disco-pop."
Mojo (Publisher) (11/03, p.138) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Fascinating stuff...an essential treat for Ross fans, Chic fans and dance historians..."

I forgot how great this album was. Upside down, I'm coming out, Friend to Friend are superb. not to mention the beautiful and pulsating groove of "Have fun Again," and the sweet melody of "Now that you're gone."they have become additions to my Ipod.

5 stars The Chic Mystique
Chic (founded & produced by Nile Rogers-guitar and, the late, Bernard Edwards-bass) was, probably the most successful of all disco acts ('Le Freak' is the biggest selling single in the history of Atlantic Records). 'Diana' is, without a doubt Ms. Ross' best album. 'Im Coming Out' is an anthem, still. 'Have Fun Again', and 'My Old Piano' are among my favorites of all time, period! Though Ms. Ross was renowned for her clarity and finesse, Chic brought out her power. 'Im Coming Out' and 'Upside Down' rocked the charts and they sound just as good today. 'The Chic Mystique' was how they could make any singer sound great, and the great sound exceptionally so.

5 stars She always finds her way
The other reviewers got it right. This is a work of art. Spare, modern, shifting rhythms and teasing chants. Producer and artist are seamless (despite the studio tempest).

Throughout the 1980s and early '90s, few contemporary rock artists were able to come up with as many lighthearted, guilty pleasures as Bryan Adams. This is especially evident through So Far So Good, which neglects all album fillers and compiles many of his most noteworthy songs, from such rockers as "Summer of '69," "Run to You," and "Cuts Like a Knife" to the equally popular power ballads "Heaven" and "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You." Also included is the all-new "Please Forgive Me," one of his best power ballads yet. It's not quite a perfect compilation, however; in particular, his Top 20 hits "She's Only Happy When She's Dancin" and "Thought I'd Died and Gone to Heaven" are overlooked. These are only minor flaws, though. There is no better introduction to Bryan Adams to date than So Far So Good. ~ Barry Weber
By 1993, when Bryan Adams released his first collection of greatest hits, he had enjoyed 12 years in the music business during a span that had seen hot trends like new wave and late '80s hair metal fall by the wayside. Adams managed

Diana
CD $9.39  3.5 stars
UK budget-price compilation for the Motown recording act that scored over 40 hits in the R&B Top 40 charts. 19 tracks including 'City Of Angels', 'Free Press', 'Night Life', 'SMOG', 'Gemini', 'Do It Baby' and more. The 18-track COLLECTION focuses on the 1970s work by the Miracles folloing Smokey Robinson's departure for a solo career, including the disco smash "Love Machine."
While a deeper dip into the Miracles' first release (Renaissance) wouldn't have hurt, The Essential Collection is still a fine overview of their post-Smokey Robinson recordings on Motown with Billy Griffin. The CD relies heavily on cuts from their best-selling City of Angels album: ...

England Dan Nights Are Forever CD  (1976)

Diana
CD $9.69  5 stars
Nights Are Forever was the breakthrough album for Dan Seals and John Coley after some sincere and excellent work on A&M Records in the early '70s. Two of their biggest hits were the title track and the beautiful "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight." Those songs are a good indication of the fine performances this 1976 album contains. The duo's originals like "Long Way Home" and the Dan Fogelberg-ish "Westward Wind" could have been hits as well displaying superb musicianship and delicate vocals. This album is very much a companion piece to the Parker McGee album recorded around the same time, on the same label, with pretty much the same musicians. Producer Kyle Lehning has the sounds so similar a survey panel would probably not be able to figure out which song came from which album. What Nights Are Forever has that the Parker McGee album does not is "There'll Never Be Another For Me," a song co-written by Parker McGee, England Dan, and John Ford Coley -- it is a rare look at what a perfect synergy these musicians have, and it is an exceptional song. You can feel how cautious and serious the two singers are here. By the time Dowdy Ferry Road was released in 1977 they were settling in to a formula, and 1979's Dr. Heckle and Mr. Jive has low points that feel like fatigue offsetting the highs. Nights Are Forever does not suffer that hit or miss dilemma; it captures the band while in between the magical folk minstrel material they espoused earlier and while developing the refined sound that brought them into the Top 25 a half a dozen times. "Lady" ...

The sincerity of their days on A&M Records has turned to total formula by the time Dr. Heckyl & Mr. Jive came around -- and Robert Louis Stevenson expert, author Ray McNally, makes it clear in his book on Mr. Hyde that the true pronunciation is Dr. Jeekill (as in, "I Kill and Hide"). It is quite a paradox that this justified attack on the Hollywood system uses the mispronunciation of ...

If Dowdy Ferry Road was their bleak moment in song, Some Things Don't Come Easy is the calm before the storm, a port prior to the schizophrenia that was Dr. Heckyll and Mr. Jive. Wandering songs like "Who's Lonely Now" are indicative of this album, and it is only one of two titles the singers pen together. They look alike on the smiling, happy airbrushed front cover, but you can almost see sadness in their eyes on the photos on the back. It must have been an intense period as they came up with yet another Top Ten hit, their ...
