When you think of R&B's great falsettos, Eddie Kendricks is a name that comes up along with Philip Bailey, Curtis Mayfield, Blue Magic's Ted Mills and the Stylistics' Russell Thompkins, Jr. Most of the solo albums that Kendricks recorded for Motown in the '70s are worth owning, but if you're on a tight budget and want to stick to his more essential solo recordings, The Ultimate Collection would be the most logical purchase. Released in 1998, this generous disc contains 16 songs that he recorded after leaving the Temptations. Many of them are essential gems, including "Boogie Down," "Keep On Truckin'," "Get the Cream Off the Top" and "Shoeshine Boy." The late singer could be quite charismatic, and he brings plenty of charm to the ballad "Skippin' Work Today" and the title song of He's a Friend (which finds Kendricks expressing his Christian beliefs without preaching and/or getting in your face). Though not all of the selections are gems (some are merely decent), this is by far the best Kendricks collection available on CD. ~ Alex Henderson Ultimate Collection Music Eddie Kendricks Ultimate Collection Songs Ultimate Collection Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Very Good Like most Kendricks fans I'm a big Temptations fan. Eddie was a huge part of thier sound, and he was able to stand alone and keep on truckin'. Great lead vocals, but I did miss the beautiful harmonies from the Temps. Overall, I like this album and I'm glad I bought it. Submitted by Paul (Howell, NJ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Eddie Cooks on This CD The best thing i can say about this cd is that Eddie cooks on this one for sure, didn't get a chance to get into Eddie when he went solo but boy did i ever get into him when i purchased this cd. "Keep on Truckin'", the lead in is an extended version from the early 70's release but fairs very-well. I just can't get enough of the 2nd track "If You Let Me", each and every time i put the cd on i must hear this cut seven or eight times of more. (Just love it!). I dig "Shoeshine Boy", because i was a shoeshine boy back in 1966, and that particular song takes me back to high-school days. "Date with The Rain", is a number that the soul train dancers can strut their stuff down the soul train line even-today!. If no one has any Eddie Kendricks collection in their collection of cd's this would defintely be one to get and add. I'm saying to everyone who read this is you can't loose with this one. As Eddie says on one of the tune "Get It While It Hot". Keep Eddie memories alive... Buy it! Submitted by rooseveltwllms (Detroit Mich USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Father of silky Falsetto. School is now open!!!!! People, Eddie Kendricks is the father of the falsetto voice in America. This man has made that vocal pitch fashionable and manly. Many other artists: Phil Bailey of Earth Wind&Fire, Ted Mills of Blue Magic, Russell of the Stylistics, William Hart of the Delphonics, the late Harry Ray (R.I.P.), as well as countless others (me included), have all attended Eddie Kendricks High.
As a former lead vocalist for the Temptations, Eddie was able to strike it out successfully as a solo artist. At one point, Eddie was Motown's most successful act.
On this CD, you'll enjoy such songs as **Can I, **This Used To Be The Home Of Johnnie Mae, Skippin' Work Today, **Darling Come Back Home, as well as up- tempo hits: Date With The Rain, **Girl You Need A Change Of Mind, **He's A Friend and Boogie Down.
This CD is a safe buy -- a BEST buy!!!
Eddie, Thank you for the countless listening pleasure; R.I.P.!!!

$6.35 Though Gino Vannelli's third record didn't contain a big hit single like its predecessor, STORM AT SUNUP was a significant step forward artistically. Combining the Stevie Wonder-esque synth textures of POWERFUL PEOPLE with a complex jazz-rock fusion sound and vocal gymnastics occasionally reminiscent of Tim Buckley, the album finds Vannelli at his most musically ambitious. "Mama Coco" sounds like Weather Report jamming with Jamiroquai singer Jason Kay, while "Love is a Night" makes ELP-style keyboard rock sound like pure love-makin' music. By this point, Vannelli ...

$11.39 Saxman Lamb comes out like a lion - The Oregonian Review by marty Hughley, January 11, 2002From the time he began making a name for himself in the Portland music scene more than a decade ago, saxophonist Patrick Lamb-just out of Oregon Episcopal School, fresh-faced, earnest, and ambitious- has explored a variety of styles. He's worked on his straight-ahead jazz chops in quintets, jam sessions and the like. He's worked with contemporary jazz stars and blues veterans. The main direction of his career though, has been toward smooth jazz, which not only holds the best commercial prospects for a contemporary saxophonist but fits with Lamb's crowd-leaser musical personality. But that genre never seemed to spur Lamb to develop his artistic voice beyond the polishing of surfaces; even his gutsiest blowing could come across as facile (as eveidenced on "The Closer I Get," his album from about a year ago). But now out comes "Sunshine Alley," a bright, welcome sign that Lamb's decade of hard work and eclecticism have really paid off. Taking on the time-honored tradition of the organ trio, Lamb teams up with Hammond B3 player Louis Pain, best known for his work with Paul deLay's great blues band, and completes the circle alternately with Mel Brown or Jason Carter on drums. Steeped in the soul-jazz approach of the 1960's, this is music that proves you can be direct and accessible without ingratiating your way toward the lowest common denominator. And it takes advantage of the tonal warmth and openhearted phrasing at the same time that it pushes Lamb to dig a little deeper for the authentic expression.Friday's show to mark the album's release should be a ray of sunshine for the soul. - Marty HughleyBiographyAlthough his influences in the past have been Jazz, he is currently crossing over as a recording artist and songwriter in a multitude of formats. Tours with Diane Shuur, Bobby Caldwell and Gino Vannelli have made him known as a respected musician. Born in Jackson, Mississippi, Patrick ...
