A lively, spontaneous record that manages to sound both relaxed and forceful at the same time, A Toda Cuba Le Gusta shows off the talents of many of Cuba's elder statesmen of Afro-Cuban jazz. Over gently pulsating conga grooves and low-register ostinatos, such luminaries as pianist Ruben Gonzalez and singer Manuel "Puntillita" Licea float dramatic melodies, as their solo contributions are answered by brass section chords as thick and sweet as cane syrup. Although it is Ruben Gonzalez' presence on this album that gets the most attention, his tendency towards relentless chromaticism becomes tiresome early on, especially when it is contrasted with the exquisite phrasing and tremulous beauty of singers such as Licea, Raul Planas, and Ibrahum Ferrer. As would be expected, the trumpets blare with traditional Cuban bravado, evoking gentle romance and fiery passion with equal ease. Growing up right on the Mississippi River, some of her favorite activities were swimming, frog and turtle catching, building forts, riding bike, and of course, singing. The town was very small (189ppl) but right on the water, so because it was unincorporated, they always had this huge fireworks display every year. Moxie believes to this day, that that is where her love of crowds comes from. Also in fact her love for dancing, as every year during that same Forth of July celebration, they would block off the street and have a dance and hundreds of people would come from miles around for the festivities. Moxie remembers dancing and dancing to the live music. And then when her mother would make her go to bed, she'd sit and watch from the window above in their 2nd story apartment.Moxie started singing when she was just 5. The first memory of her singing was sitting in between her mom and dad in the front seat of the station wagon, all 5 siblings in the seats behind; on the radio came The Carpenters with, of all songs, 'Sing a Song'. So she began to sing and the car erupted with praises and 'oh isn't she so cute'. She said she remembered thinking to herself that singing makes other people happy. That, she believes, is why she still does it to this day, and always will. 'And', she chimes in with a grin, 'there's no way you've seen the best of me yet.'I myself admire the tenacity of this girl. She made it through the divorce of her parents at 5, which she vividly remembers, and the untimely death of her mother when she was just fourteen. If you really know her and ask her, she'll tell you straight out that the death of her mother 'wrecked' her. And she says, music saved her. You'd never know the pain she carries of it all. When you find her, you'll find her pressing on. And usually in the best mood. Her main goal in life is to help hurting people. And if she's not working tirelessly on her music or spending time with her two kids, she's helping someone: the neighbor, the Boy's and Girl's Club, giving blankets to the Samaritan Center, giving her money to charity, singing for any charity function free of charge etc, etc. This girl really is a live poster board for helping people. She just came up to check on me, and said I said too much. Too bad, I'm keeping it. Many of the titles on her current album have made their way to TV, on shows like 'Smallville' and 'Numbers'. And 3 of the tracks on this album will also be on the launch of MTV'S 'M' NETWORK IN JAN. '08. Titles to be announced. Currently being managed by Cindy Toth of 'Skyview Studios', Moxie looks forward to expediting music and bookings now that she is working with new representation.
