| | Gerald Levert G CD (1999)
Corazon Duro
$14.39 Levert's reputation caught up with his lineage a long time before this 2000 release. The only thing the child of an O'Jay and leader of his surnamed band of brothers has to prove on G is that he can conjure up new ways to make the ladies swoon. No need to worry on that front, as G is sure to satisfy the candlelight-dinner plans of lovers and lovers of love around the world. What separates Levert from the crowd of R&B crooners is what allows most cream to rise to the top-the unique flavor of the man's vocals.
On G, Levert lets his sugar flow over various portraits of love in bloom, love on the rocks, and the requisite assertions of self. He blasts his way through the brassy, brash "Application (I'm Looking for a New Love)," growls out "Callin' Me," and breathes life into the serene "Nothin' to Something." By the time Kelly Price drops in on the jacked-up ballad "It Hurts Too Much to Stay," there's no turning away from the sweet softness of Levert and his confectionary G.

| | Finding Nemo DVDs (2003) Full Frame; Widescreen; Collector's Edition; Subtitled
Corazon Duro
$23.45 Co-helmed by WALL-E director Andrew Stanton, FINDING NEMO follows Marlin (voiced by Albert Brooks), an overprotective clown fish father, as he desperately searches the farthest reaches of the sea for his missing son Nemo. Marlin's journey leads him beyond the Great Barrier Reef into deeper and darker waters, where he meets Dory (Ellen DeGeneres), a forgetful yet optimistic blue tang, and a number of not-so-friendly--and often very hungry--aquatic creatures. Meanwhile, little Nemo finds himself in a dentist's fish tank in Syndey, Australia, along with ...

| | Gipsy Kings Pasajero CD (2006)
Corazon Duro
$14.49 The return to the slicker stylings and the integration of more forms are utterly comprehensible when one considers how much Latin popular music has changed in the past couple of years. The Kings are used to being on top of the charts, and they aren't about to throw in the towel to go back to folk music. That said, there are rootsy tunes here, though they are in the minority. That doesn't mean this record is a loss: far from it. On "Café," the band (with Eidel on accordion) goes backward, strutting through a joyous singalong son. "Canastero" is a mid-tempo ballad full of passion, pathos, and the kind of longing that's hard to find anywhere but in the Kings' best songs. One of the more experimental tunes, "Sol y Luna," features the upright bass playing of Bernard Paganotti (he's amazing throughout the album), and also a shimmering kit drum played by Patrice Renson, with Ava Saty's duduk playing a stunning little melody throughout this heady romantic tune. It may, in fact, be the finest moment on the record -- and an all too brief one. The percussion and upright bass playing on "Guaranga" are fine ballast for the fiery flamenco guitaristry on the instrumental. In sum, Pasajero is a mixed bag, in terms of an eclectic mix of tunes. The big-band numbers don't work quite so well, but they aren't in the majority here either. [Pasajero was re-released in 2007 on Nonesuch as an enhanced CD with bonus video footage] ~ Thom Jurek
It's been two years since the Gipsy Kings' masterpiece Roots, an album where they kissed big, extravagant production, as well as big drums and keyboards, goodbye. Apparently old habits are hard to break. On the cover of 2007's Pasajero, the Kings look back to the natural thang. They are posed on a picnic table in the middle ...
