It's English-style two-tone ska, complete with black trousers and checkered jackets, from Orange County, California, no less! If you're not hip to this reggae-influenced, hopped-up brand of dance music, you should be. When it's done right, it's just about the best party music of all time. And the Supertones know what they're doing. This is a tight, well-produced disc, with plentiful amounts of revved-up ska tunes. "Unconditional Love" is a perfect example, as the guitar chunks away with that trademark against-the-grain rhythmic style and the horns riff away joyously in the background. "Resolution" steps up the tempo even more, and adds some fuzzy guitar to boot. The Supertones are one of those bands you just know must be a killer live act, but thankfully their unbridled energy also comes across on CD.

Supertones Strike Back album
$14.95 OFFERINGS was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rock Gospel Album.
Some Christian rock bands have a spiritual base to their music, but they bury it amid the trappings of contemporary pop to such an extent that the message is lost. Third Day manages to keep its Christian-centered themes at the forefront without sacrificing any of its rock credibility.
A good example is the opening "King of Glory," which sings the praises of "the prince of Peace" in no uncertain terms, but whose gently insistent rhythms and jangly guitars would sound perfectly at home on ...

$9.09 CONSPIRACY #5 was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Rock Gospel Album.
Third Day's second album, Conspiracy, No. 5, is an intriguing blend of roots-rock and Christian punk. While not all of the cuts are successful, the tracks that work are dynamic, rousing and spiritual, ...
| | Jars Of Clay If I Left The Zoo CD (1999)
Supertones Strike Back music CDs
$11.49 IF I LEFT THE ZOO won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album.
In the '90s, groups like Jars of Clay began to address the perceived gap between Christian music and rock. For young rock/pop artists of the Christian faith, there seemed to be no happy medium until groups like this one learned how to keep the beat while keeping in close contact with their spiritual values. IF I LEFT THE ZOO proves to be a rather ambitious effort for this quartet. It opens with "Goodbye, Goodnight," an eccentric tune whose chamber string section and sophisticated harmonies recall SGT. PEPPER-era Beatles. After that, though, it's straight into a hard-grooving rocker ("Unforgetful You") laced with funky rhythms and buzzing synths. The incidental studio noise and occasional self-parodic touches that crop up throughout the album show that, though their lyrics often address spiritual themes, Jars of Clay have an extremely well-developed sense of humor. Make no mistake, Jars aren't a bunch of scripture-obsessed ...

Supertones Strike Back songs
$14.59 The punk rock tradition upheld by such veteran acts as Green Day is continued here by this Christian band from Orange County, who also play a kind of slowed-down fourth generation ska, often, as in the case of "Forward To The Future" and "Spend it With You," within the same song. Their Christian inspiration isn't immediately obvious; a cursory listen may reveal only the usual misguided angst of the Californian punk rocker, but further perusal and a glance at their besuited stage personas reveals a bunch who could equally be the Jehovah's Witnesses ...

Supertones Strike Back album
$14.29 With their close-cropped hair, matching outfits and two-man horn section, the Supertones might seem contrived for the sake of joining in on the California punk-ska trend. Closer inspection of CHASE THE SUN, however, reveals ...
