Bear Family Records continued exercising its infatuation with American rock & roll, reissuing the first two albums by the Astronauts (listed in reverse order of release in the title here). The group's first album, Surfin' with the Astronauts, has the greater reputation, being a kind of minor off the cuff classic, cut in just two days by a band that was brand-new to surf music. But the material on Competition Coupe, if lacking the appeal of something done on the fly, and a lot more calculated in the process, is just as enjoyable and a little more ambitious, at least as far as the singing (admittedly, never this group's strong point) and the selection of material. In any case, it sounds great on this CD, and the 51 minutes of surf and car songs here are a delight, even if they're not groundbreaking. And the annotation about the band and the circumstances behind the two albums is fascinating. ~ Bruce Eder

A huge departure for this masked, previously all-instrumental surf quartet, their fifth album is, as indicated by its title, augmented by vocals. But not just any vocals. Eleven out of the 13 tracks boast a different singer (Big Sandy, who also toured with the band in 2001, appears twice) adding just the right touch to the disc's eclectic covers of rockin' soul (los Bravos' "Black Is Black" with the Mavericks' Raul Malo), British Invasion-styled pop ("Bumble Bee" with a rare vocal from Tom Petty guitarist Mike Campbell), good-time roots (Nick Lowe is guest lead bassist on his own "Shake That Rat," one of the disc's two instrumentals), weepy string-laden '60s ballads (Sixpence None the Richer's Leigh Nash gives ...

Just because Wilco ended up getting all the press and the Jim O'Rourke hipster cred, that doesn't mean Son Volt should remain forever destined to be the "other" Uncle Tupelo spin-off band. In fact, hardcore UT fans should feel a strong attachment to the latter, as they stayed closer to the spirit of Tupelo's post-modern country-rock. RETROSPECTIVE does an excellent job of chronicling the group's first five years. This is something of a reunion album; after working apart for some time, Elton John and lyricist Bernie Taupin, the wordsmith behind John's biggest '70s hits, come together again. Also on board after a long hiatus are original Elton John Band members Davey Johnstone and Nigel Olsson. Even "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" duet partner Kiki Dee shows up, singing backing vocals on "When a Woman Doesn't Want You" and "Understanding Women" (seems to be a theme there). Highlights include the hit title song and the anti-Thatcher anti-'80s nostalgia piece "Sweat It Out," which includes the memorable line "She-devils were ruling Britain" and gives Elton the opportunity to stretch out with one of his best (and longest) piano solos ever.
Elton John once claimed that he could remember The One among his latter-day albums because it was the first he recorded without drugs or alcohol. If true -- and there's no reason to doubt him -- that could be the reason why this has more character than most of his albums since the early '80s, holding together well in its deliberately measured, mature songcraft by Elton and Bernie Taupin. There's less gloss than on many of his late-'80s records, and John gives a fairly convincing performance throughout this set of pretty good songs. If there's any real problem, it's that the album just doesn't have many memorable songs. Though they're all reasonably melodic and well-crafted, none of the them have memorable musical or lyrical ...
