| | Rockin' Rollin' Johnny Horton CD - Import Johnny Horton Discography of CDs
Although several of his hits are featured -- including "Honky Tonk Man," "The Woman I Need," and "All Grown Up" -- most of Rockin' Rollin' Johnny Horton is comprised of obscurities, culled from his early career. The album veers between is rockabilly experiments and honky tonk, and the entire CD is highly enjoyable compilation for fans of his harder-edged music, even though a handful of tracks haven't aged particularly well. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Rockin' Rollin' Johnny Horton
$20.09 Juice Newton's two most popular albums, 1981's Juice and 1982's Quiet Lies, are combined onto one CD on this Australian release. While not precisely the same thing as a best-of compilation, it does include no less than six of the seven Pop Top Forty hits she chalked up ("Angel of the Morning," "Queen of Hearts," "The Sweetest Thing (I've Ever Known)," "Love's Been a Little Hard on Me," "Break It to Me Gently," and "Heart of the Night") as well as historical liner notes. For Newton's more pop-oriented fans who want something more than a greatest-hits collection, this is a well-assembled big bang-for-the-bucks package. ~ Richie Unterberger

| | Grand Magus Wolf's Return CD (2005) (Import) Import; Japan
Rockin' Rollin' Johnny Horton
$15.59 In the 21st century, metal is full of bands that favor brutality for the sake of brutality -- bands that live for sensory assault and believe that bombast is its own reward. Such bands (which can be found in anything from death metal/black metal to metalcore to alternative metal) have their limitations, but they can be exhilarating if one has a taste for the extreme. Nonetheless, there's still something to be said for more melodic metal bands, and melody is a high priority on Grand Magus' second full-length album, Wolf's Return. This is the type of metal that values musicality, craftsmanship, and nuance as well as forcefulness; if the Swedes were deprived of their amps and forced to record a totally acoustic version of Wolf's Return, the material would still hold up. Of course, the fact that Grand Magus combine their melodic/harmonic sense with a lot of loud, amplified, balls-to-the-wall aggression is what makes them both headbangers and craftsmen -- and this time, they do it in a way that links doom metal/stoner rock with power metal. Grand Magus' first full-length album, Monument, and their self-titled debut EP of 2002 earned them a reputation for being a doom/stoner ...
| | Long Lost Psychobilly V.1 CD (2006) (Import) United Kingdom
Rockin' Rollin' Johnny Horton
$8.32 Though no psychobilly artist has ever made it all the way up the stairway to superstardom, most psychobilly bands never even got the memo that there was a stairway to superstardom, let alone that they perhaps might want to climb it themselves. Such is the charm of psychobilly -- it's always been a cult fascination since it was born around the same time as punk, and now, 30 years after the Cramps formed (arguably the most important band in the psychobilly genre, and often cited as its founder) and nearly as long after the Meteors introduced the scene to the U.K., psychobilly is well into its age of renaissance, though some might say it never left the radar. When the Cramps' popularity dwindled, Reverend Horton Heat ...
