There isn't a chart record here, but this 25-song collection is still worth owning by any rock & roll fan worthy of the designation. The title tune, cut for Era Records, with its imitation Bo Diddley-style chorus, is a rockabilly classic, but there's a lot more here to recommend this collection -- Burnette's cover of Jesse Stone's "Don't Let Go" and the slow "Rainin' in My Heart"; the soulful ballad "Sad Boy"; the stirring, religious-inspired "He Gave Me My Hands"; the Marty Robbins-style "A Full House"; and the Del Shannon-like "Feminine Touch." The pop stuff is a little sappy (though it's still better than Elvis' work of the same period), and the previously unissued cuts are not quite as strong as the Burnette sides that came out at the time -- and "Little Child" is an embarrassment -- but there's a lot here to love, and it makes a great adjunct to the best of the Rock 'n Roll Trio. ~ Bruce Eder

| | Enigma Platinum Collection CDs (2010) With Book; Bonus CD; Box Set
Great Shakin' Fever CD music
$21.58 Platinum Collection is a triple-disc set that contains one disc of Enigma's greatest hits, one disc of remixes, and one disc of "The Lost Ones," brief instrumental snippets that were used as source material and ideas for full-length tracks. Naturally, this last disc is what's interesting for the hardcore; unlike the rest of the set, this disc consists of unreleased material, but even the hardcore may find this slightly ephemeral; ...
| | Mike Bloomfield Super Session CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Great Shakin' Fever music CDs
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield ...

Great Shakin' Fever songs
$10.38 The 2010 issue of Mississippi Blues by Sonny Landreth on the Fuel 2000 imprint is not a new album, nor is it a representative compilation of his oeuvre. In fact, the set is a complete repackage of the album entitled The Crazy Cajun Recordings originally issued on CD by Great Britain's Edsel in 1999. The material dates from 1973 and 1977, recorded with the famed Huey P. Meaux (aka the Crazy Cajun) when he wasn't touring ...
| | Midlake Courage Of Others CD (2010)
Great Shakin' Fever album
$10.70 Midlake's third album, The Courage of Others, resides in the same woody, bearded Laurel Canyon neighborhood as their previous release The Trials of Van Occupanther. Tim Smith and his crew of laid-back balladeers have created another mesmerizing, smoke-filled work of quiet beauty that may not exactly improve on Trials, but does refine and focus their sound. Smith's tender vocals, the band's sympathetically ...

| | Exquisite Death Of Saxon Shore CD (2005) Digipak
Great Shakin' Fever CD music
$11.49 There's no question that the story behind The Exquisite Death of Saxon Shore is a fine example of artistic persistence -- Saxon Shore founder Matt Doty had to deal with the departure of his earlier bandmates, recruiting and working with a slew of new performers using the Net to trade files for rehearsals and demos and then finally squeezing in a time-constrained recording session with producer/supporter Dave Fridmann, not to mention collaborating with cover designer Ben Volta throughout. Is the album as good as its back story, though? Yes, but only to an extent -- Saxon Shore are clearly aiming for a Big Epic Rock sound in the way that Fridmann is unquestionably great at overseeing, ...
