| | Howard White Western Swing & Steel Instrumentals CD - Import Howard White Discography of CDs
This CD includes 10 tracks from 1976, additional tracks from 1953 recorded with Grady Martin, and a 28 page booklet.
Drawn from across more than 20 years of work by Howard White -- from his first recording sessions of his own in late 1953 for Hickory Records, and sessions held in October of 1976 -- this CD delivers a neat 30 minutes of supremely sweet sounding steel guitar, courtesy of a man who started where Jerry Byrd left off. The later material has the smoothness of modern Nashville countrypolitan production, and benefits mightily from the presence of star accompanists, including Buddy Spicher and Pete Drake. The material includes pieces by Fred Rose, Bob Wills, and others. Curiously, the only originals credited to White come from the 1953 sessions, which also offer his most intense playing, and have held up extremely well sonically. For fans of either the man or the instrument, it's worth the purchase, offering a rare chance to hear one of Nashville's renowned virtuosi step out on his own. ~ Bruce Eder

| | Bingo Ad Astra Per Aspera CD (2001)
Western Swing & Steel Instrumentals songs
$11.49 Don't be fooled by the album's title, which translates "to the stars through difficulties." For his second outing under the name "Bingo," Kevin Richey keeps things pretty down-to-earth. Joined by his Freak Mountain Rambler and former Golden Delicious bandmates, Richey trades the sitar and exotic Eastern textures of H-Om for simple fiddle, mandolin, and pedal steel guitar accompaniment. But Richey makes alternative country uniquely his own. His cover of Elizabeth Cotten's "Oh Babe, It Ain't No Lie" swirls with psychedelic guitars, only to be followed by a sparse banjo-and-mandolin version of Stephen Foster's "Hard Times." Richey's own songs fall somewhere in the vast middle of these extremes. "So Moved" communicates an entire range of emotions using just three lines of lyrics. "Sunset" is a slow shuffle about lost love, lost time, and flying too near the sun. When Richey's baritone breaks into a sweet falsetto during "Walk a Mile," there's little wondering how the song's story will end. A batch of old folk tunes and love songs may seem like a step backwards after Richey's adventurous debut, but that's okay. Sometimes it's necessary to take a step back, if only to get a better (or at least less difficult) look at the stars. ~ Brian Beatty
"To The Stars Through Difficulty" is the Motto of the state of Kansas where Bingo was born. This recording is his second solo release."Ad Astra Per Aspera" consists of a few classic traditionals, a new musical composition for Elizabeth Cotten's "O Babe, It Ain't No Lie" and some original songs that he has written while living in Oregon, Texas, and on the road. All of the selections offer personal insight into the heart and mind of Bingo as he makes his way through the arduous process of becoming a journeyman drifter and ruminates upon the essences of Life...and Death. This is a thoughtfully crafted document ...
