| | That'll Flat Git It!, Vol. 4 CD - Import (1 Customer Review)
Like the previous three volumes of Bear Family's That'll Flat Git It, the fourth installment contains a welath of obscure, and frequently bizarre, rockabilly. For Vol. 4, Bear Family reached into the vaults of Festival Records, a label that had no stars or hit singles to speak of (although songwriter Otis Blackwell did record a handful of singles for the label). Almost all of this disc is solely of interest to fetishists -- after all, it features seven tracks from Billy Barry, five cuts by Charlie Starr, two songs by Ronnie Dio, and "Motorcycle" from one Billy Balls -- and even then, much of this music is only of passing interest. While That'll Flat Git It, Vol. 4 does have a handful of good cuts (Barry's "The Wild One," Starr's "You Ain't My Number One," and Blackwell's "One Broken Heart for Sale"), it remains a lesser entry in the series. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | That'll Flat Git It!, Vol. 6: Rockabilly From The Decca Vaults CD (1994) (Import) Germany
That'll Flat Git It!, Vol. 4 music CDs
$21.15 That'll Flat Git It, Vol. 6 is the second time Bear Family dipped into the vaults of Decca Records to assemble a collection of rare and arcane rockabilly (the first was Vol. 2), and while the results aren't quite as consistently entertaining as its predecessor, Vol. 6 is nevertheless one of the finest installments of the series. The key to its success is how the bizarre backwoods rockers are juxtaposed with country singers like Red Foley, Justin Tubb, Rex Allen, and Red Sovine trying to ride the rockabilly ...

That'll Flat Git It!, Vol. 4 album
$21.15 The way the story is usually told to -- or, at least, heard by -- neophytes, Chess Records only ever got its toe into rockabilly, by way of Chuck Berry's "Maybellene" and Dale Hawkins' "Suzie Q." This 21-track CD -- which includes Hawkins' work in its lineup -- shows how inadequate that understanding is, from the output of white rockers like Eddie Fontaine and black bluesmen like Johnny Fuller, all of whom passed through the Chess rosters, on offshoot labels such as Argo and Checker. And among the true rarities here is "Cool Off Baby" by Billy Barrix, a frantic piece of rockabilly that sounds like Elvis' Sun stuff cranked up 50-percent faster, with the singer on stimulants. The amazing aspect of this collection is not ...
| | Steve Goodman Say It In Private CD (1977)
That'll Flat Git It!, Vol. 4 CD music
$11.49 Steve Goodman reached the charts with his first two albums for Asylum Records, Jessie's Jig & Other Favorites (1975) and Words We Can Dance To (1976), and that may have convinced the label to spend more money on his next LP (money intended to be recoupable against royalties should the album take off, of course), because the sessions for Say It in Private appear to have been quite elaborate. For the first time since his second album, Somebody Else's Troubles (1973), Goodman had a real producer (i.e., somebody who produced records for a living), Joel Dorn, and among the six dozen singers and players who contributed to the sessions were plenty of arrangers and string players. Nevertheless, Say It in Private ended up being a fairly typical Steve Goodman album. In a sense, the cover art told the story. It featured a painting by Howard Carriker that replicated Jacques Louis David's famous 1793 portrait Death of Marat, in which French revolutionary and invalid Jean-Paul Marat was shown lying in his medicinal bath after having been assassinated. In Carriker's version, the body belonged to Goodman, who was alive and smiling. So, here was an expensive-looking illustration that was making a macabre joke, and the album was more of the same, really. For all the production and all those musicians, ...

That'll Flat Git It!, Vol. 4 songs
$10.69 With four albums and three EPs to their credit, the Ukrainians certainly have enough material to warrant this best-of collection. And it's good to see that they've weighted it in favor of their original and traditional material, rather than the covers of the Smiths and the Sex Pistols that, wonderful as they are, act as a lovely diversion from the meat of what the band's about. That said, the disc opens with a new track, another cover, this time of the Tornadoes' "Telstar," which feels a little hastily thrown ...
