$14.29 Though they never quite hit the same musical highs as E.L.P., Yes, or King Crimson, this German prog rock outfit garnered a huge following among those in the know. Includes the previously unissued bonus cut "Showstopper."
Spartacus may not be as progressively strong as 1973's Illusion on a Double Dimple album, but it still stands as this German outfit's second best release. Based on the famous Roman gladiator who led the rebellion against his homeland, the music supports the album's concept quite solidly, with the better tracks coming in the form of the sporadic "School of Instant Pain" and the nine- minute "March to the Eternal City," which gathers a menacing conglomeration of bass guitar riffs and pointed keyboard work. The music becomes effectively ...

| | Muddy Waters Hard Again CD (1977) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Nightbeat/Mucho Puente
$6.79 Muddy spent much of the late '60s and early '70s engaging in crossover attempts, achieving varying degrees of critical and commercial success. But no matter what far-flung paths his studio efforts took, his live performances remained unadulterated. It took the savvy of blues-rocker Johnny Winter to put Muddy's from-the-heart style back where it belonged: in the studio.
Produced by Winter, the appropriately titled HARD AGAIN finds Muddy and his regular band pounding into the old material with all the fury of their '50s heyday. For his part as guitarist, Winter successfully straddles the line between reverence and enthusiasm, laying back enough to let the master strut his stuff, but nevertheless goading Muddy on with highly audible verbal exhortations. This is as close as a studio album gets to a "live" feel. Hearing Muddy burn through a chestnut like "Mannish Boy" with the vim and vigor of a man decades younger, one begins to understand the nature of his artistic consistency and ...

"Are You Gonna Go My Way" (Lenny Kravitz/Craig Ross) was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award as "Best Rock Song."
Lenny Kravitz comes roaring out of the gate on his third full-length release, ARE YOU GONNA GO MY WAY, with the lead-off title track--a blazing, riff-propelled rocker that proudly bears the influence of Jimi Hendrix. As evidenced by that song's homage, Kravitz's late-1960s and early-'70s fixations are still firmly in place here (especially on the Led Zeppelin-esque "Is There Any Love in Your Heart" and "My Love," which recalls SGT. PEPPER'S-era Beatles). However, the singer/multi-instrumentalist also expands his palette on this album with the contemporary R&B of "Heaven Help" and the reggae-drenched "Eleutheria."
Fortunately for fans of Kravitz's tried-and-true aesthetic, he never strays far from his stomping grounds. "Believe" draws on dreamy '60s soul (complete with phased vocals and sing-along chorus), and "Come On and Love Me" works a hard funk-rock groove. Kravitz's retro-minded songwriting and rough-hewn voice (which revs on upbeat tunes and croons soulfully on ballads) conjure the spirits of rock's greatest icons, updating pop's history books ...
