Red Ingle, like the Hoosier Hot Shots and Spike Jones (Ingle was a City Slicker for a couple of years), performed novelties and song parodies with inventive, over-the-top arrangements, and a wicked sense of humor. A duet with Jo Stafford, "Tim Tay-Shun (Temptation)," became a smash hit for Capitol in 1947, and Ingle kept cranking out similar material for the label for several years afterwards. Some of his creations are still hilarious and simply brilliant; others, particularly those from the early '50s, are forced and uninspired. Overall, there are more stunners than duds, and the packaging and fidelity is excellent. This is sophisticated, witty music in the guise of hillbilly stupidity. ~ Greg Adams

This is an album which will be worn out a nd need replacing - so buy two copies at a time. It is a pretty comprehensive collection of Red Ingle's output following his departure (in acrimonious circumstances) from Spike Jones. Right from the kick-off the pace and the humour never let up and the opener 'Tim-tayshun' sets the tone. I have friends in my own band who wrote Ingle off as a novelty act it was only when we began rehearsing Cigareets, Whuskey and Wild Wild Women that a deep respect for the musicianship emerged. The players on the album are outstanding, but they had to be - the comedy only gets the attention it requires if the musical accompaniment doesn't distract you. It doesn't but equally just give some attention as it is breathtaking, and for real guitar buffs you will find Les Paul playing on some of the tracks.
Country Washburne is an important element of the fun, and his vocal on 'I Love You (For Seventy Mental Reasons) is an absolute joy. But what am I saying - the whole album is an absolute joy, why are you wasting time reading this when you could just move your cursor over and order it now.
