$5.69 Lawrence stars as ex-con Miles Logan--a crafty jewel thief forced to hide his stash of diamonds at a construction site when his $20 million heist went awry. Now that he's out of the slammer, he wants the loot back! There's only one problem--the place he hid them is now an L.A. police ...
| | Third World Journey To Addis CD (1978)
Texas Rose music CDs
$6.85 Digitally remastered by Jeff Willens (Universal Music Group Studios).
A fairly rare item in the Third World discography--it was originally released only in Jamaica in 1978, not showing up in the US and UK until some time after--JOURNEY TO ADDIS is one of Third World's best albums. It's also one of their more rootsy and serious affairs, with a more pronounced Rasta vibe than many of their poppier LPs.
There are still the usual Third World R&B influences, as on the opening "One Cold Boogie," "Cold Sweat"--not the James Brown tune--and the almost discoish "Now That We've Found Love" (think of Philadelphia International's Gamble and Huff productions remixed by Lee "Scratch" Perry). But, from the aptly titled "Cool Meditation" to the fiery title track, the emphasis is more on serious declarations of religious and social pride. JOURNEY TO ADDIS is a thoughtful but never over-serious roots ...
| | U2 Wide Awake In America CD (1985)
Texas Rose songs
$6.85 This includes live recordings and out-takes from the "Unforgettable Fire" tour and album, 1984-85.
Put together as a follow-up to the phenomenally successful THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE, the EP WIDE AWAKE IN AMERICA captures two of that album's finest cuts as recorded live. While the studio version of "Bad" displayed U2's trademark whisper-to-a-scream structure, the slow burn is extended even further in the live arena. "A Sort Of Homecoming" is given the same over-the-top dramatic treatment. Throughout, Bono soars, evoking a drama of near-biblical ...

| | Faith Hill Joy To The World CD (2008)
Texas Rose CD music
$11.69 The marketing department at Warner Brothers must have really wanted to get a jump on the holiday season when they released Faith Hill's 2008 Christmas album, JOY TO THE WORLD, in September. Hill's set of carols and traditional songs may not suit the late summer, but that doesn't make JOY TO THE WORLD any less of a treat. As albums like BREATHE and FIREFLIES proved, Hill has no problem crossing over to mainstream audiences, and this Christmas set (the singer's first) should strengthen that appeal. If the song selection itself isn't surprising--including the usual fare like "What Child is This," "O Come All Ye Faithful," and "Silent Night"--the arrangements are. A large orchestra, featuring brass, strings, reeds, percussion, and two different choirs, give these renditions a full, sweeping flavor reminiscent of the big bands of the 1940s and `50s. The album also includes an original single, "A Baby Changes Everything," which features one of Hill's most compelling performances.
Arrangers: Dann Huff; Faith Hill; David Campbell; Byron Gallimore.
Personnel: London Oratory School Schola, Metro Voices (vocals); Dann Huff, Jerry McPherson, Tom Bukovac (guitar); Pete Hutlinger, Bryan Sutton (acoustic guitar); David Schnaufer (dulcimer); Jonathan Yudkin (celtic harp, fiddle, viola, cello); Michael Compton ...

| | Reba Mcentire Heart To Heart CD (1981)
Texas Rose songs
$4.99 Reba McEntire's gradually developing career marked another milestone with the honky tonk ballad "Today All Over Again," which was her first single to peak in the Top Five of the country charts. Mercury Records naturally included it on her next album, Heart to Heart, released as the single was on its way up, and that connection enabled the LP to be McEntire's first to reach the country album chart after her previous three albums had failed. The ten-song collection with a running time under 30 minutes (standard for country LPs) demonstrated that McEntire remained a promising, but not yet accomplished country artist. "Today All Over Again" was the most traditional sounding track, but producer Jerry Kennedy was able to take some stylistic risks with McEntire because her distinct Oklahoma accent and personable, throaty delivery made everything she sang sound country, no matter what arrangement was backing her. Thus, the string-filled "There Ain't No Love," essentially a soft pop ballad, seemed as authentically country as "How Does It Feel to Be Free," which McEntire sang with only a piano as accompaniment. And while she definitely put emotion into her voice, McEntire was able to give a relatively understated reading to the sad story-song "Small Two-Bedroom Starter" that prevented it from ...

| | Beyond The Sea CD (2004) Soundtrack
Texas Rose CD music
$9.09 Kevin Spacey harbored a longtime fascination with Bobby Darin that ultimately pushed him to direct and star in BEYOND THE SEA, a biopic about the singer. Taking things a step further, Spacey--known as a talented mimic--sang a host of Darin classics in the film, as captured on the soundtrack album. While Spacey's vocal impression isn't exactly blindfold-test material (his tone isn't as big and brassy as Darin's), he does a far more impressive job than anyone might have expected. The authentically recreated arrangements match Spacey step for step, from the rock & roll of "Splish Splash" to the swinging staple "Mack the Knife" to the folk-rock of the Tim Hardin-penned "If I Were a Carpenter." The latter is an especially ...
| | Best Of Billy Joe Royal CD (2005)
Texas Rose music CDs
$6.99 Billy Joe Royal took a Joe South song called "Down in the Boondocks," layered in enough echo to make a bat dizzy, and had a huge hit with it in the early '60s. With its wry awareness of American class dynamics and Royal's fervent, desperate lead vocal, the song holds up surprisingly well even in this new century. Unfortunately, the version of "Boondocks" found here is a re-recorded one, as are the versions of two other South songs that Royal took to the charts in the 1960s, "I Knew You When" and "Hush." Royal's voice is still impressively strong on these recent remakes, ...
