Bob Wills imitator Ole Rasmussen had a few years of success with the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the early '50s, the last years of Western swing's broad popularity. Although Rasmussen's worship of Wills' sound can be simply overbearing, his music is attractive today because of the songwriting contributions of fiddler Tex Atchison, especially the classic tongue-twister "Sleepy Eyed John" and "Which-A-Way Will You Go." After Atchison's departure in 1951 the best songs are collaborations between Rasmussen and various band members. Of these, "You Were My Dream Last Night" is pretty great, but otherwise the collection is thoroughly average, with the excellent sound quality being an unexpected bonus. ~ Jim Smith

An artistic renaissance overtook Egypt in the 1920s and '30s, an explosion of new theaters and cabarets resulting in something of a golden age for female Egyptian vocalists. Suddenly in demand, and finding outlets unavailable to them previously, female actors and singers seized the opportunity to grab the spotlight, and many of them found their way onto recordings -- recordings that, for the most part, have been lost to time. Women of Egypt 1924-1931, subtitled "Pioneers of Stardom and Fame," is a painstakingly compiled, and copiously annotated, compendium of 16 rare sides, a fascinating peek at a time when a feminist movement -- concurrent with the suffrage movement and the Roaring Twenties in the U.S., and the artistic blossoming of Paris -- came to Egypt and freed its women to sing. Of all of the Egyptian female singers of the era, none was more renowned than Umm Kulthum (her name is spelled in numerous ways ...

| | James Morrison Songs For You, Truths For Me CD (2008)
Sleepy Eyed John songs
$11.69 James Morrison may have the same last name as the late lead singer of the Doors, but the young Brit has much more in common with the confessional singer-songwriters of the 1970s: he's much closer to James Taylor or Jackson Browne than "Light My Fire." SONGS FOR YOU, TRUTHS FOR ME is as earnest and self-revealing as its title, filled with songs that directly address Morrison's girlfriend and other intimates, set to gentle adult contemporary soft rock tunes. "You Make It Real" and "Once When I Was Little" are key tracks.
