Live '96
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth.
Those familiar with the Live Adventures album these two recorded at the Fillmore West know how brilliant they could be on stage, and here's another gem, recorded ...

Live '96
$9.75 The giant left-handed guitarist was no stranger to the recording studio by 1966, but Albert King had still to make his mark with the record-buying public. When he linked up with the cream of Stax's Memphis musicians, including Booker T. And The MGs and the Memphis Horns, that connection was made. "Laundromat Blues", "Oh, Pretty Woman" and "Crosscut Saw" set the scene for "Born Under A Bad Sign" and "The Hunter", which quickly found their way into the repertoires of Cream and Free. The convolutions of his guitar style were perfectly complemented ...

$14.65 This superbly recorded double disc (the original engineer was Eddie Kramer, best-known for his work with Hendrix) captured over a weekend worth of dates in February 1970 at the venerable New York City venue catches the Brit boogie quartet at the peak of their powers. These shows were sandwiched between their triumphant Woodstock set and the release of Cricklewood Green, generally considered the band's best work. They find the group primed through years of roadwork, as well as obviously excited to be playing in front of an appreciative N.Y.C. crowd. Kicking off with one of Bill Graham's patented individual-member intros, ...

Live '96
$14.49 Joined again by shotgun-riding guitarist/vocalist/songwriter/producer Jimmy Vivino (who wrote or co-penned six tunes), New Yorker Bill Perry's second Blind Pig album wallows in his gruff, no-frills blues/rock. Neither Perry's throaty voice, workingman lyrics, nor guitar sound are particularly recognizable, yet he gets by on enthusiasm and fiery playing, raising the temperature on such trite concepts as "Too Hot" with his rugged, straightforward attack. Explorations into light funk ("Take You Down") and gospel ("Morning Spiritual" ...

$13.89 With the exception of the opening "Uncle Tom's Dead," which is a blues versus rap debate of only minimal interest, Guy Davis' Legacy consists of the blues from various genres. Alternating older material with his recent originals (some of which sound more traditional than the vintage songs), Davis plays straight-ahead blues, ...

| | Marcel Coenen Colour Journey CD (2006)
Live '96
$16.45 Sun Caged guitarist Marcel Coenen follows his instrumental debut album with a diverse set of self-penned material, sung by a variety of guest vocalists, which showcases his versatility within various metal genres, including the power metal of "Waiting," the prog-influenced "Patron Saint," and the death-metal of "Traumatized to the Bone."
Colour Journey is the phenomenal second solo album from Sun Caged guitarist Marcel Coenen. Colour Journey will take the listener on a voyage through many musical landscapes that will captivate its audience. Unlike Marcel’s debut solo instrumental album "Guitartalk", Colour Journey features a range of vocalists who has each put their own stamp on their respective tracks - but at the same time features five ...
