Includes liner notes by Braden King, Michael Krassner, Laura Moya & Will Oldham.
The Boxhead Ensemble is a collective of ever-changing musicians that provide the soundtrack for the film Dutch Harbor. Featured on this record are Will Oldham, of Palace fame, Edith Frost, Ken Vandermark and a host of others. Last Place to Go was recorded during the European tour of Dutch Harbor. The musicians provided improvised accompaniment to the film each night. The highlights of the tour recordings are collected on this disc. Most movie soundtracks lack unity and focus, but this album proves the opposite. Despite the fact that the songs are culled from a month's worth of recording, they are consistent and full of energy. The instrumentation ranges from cello to drums, sounding at times like classical music and at others mellow jazz and country. The film, a black and white documentary, explores the lives of Alaskan fishermen, and the music embodies the harsh but beautiful landscapes. At times, voice-over narrative's can be heard in the background making for some haunting moments. A wonderful guitar drone is the focus of "Coastal Boarder," and "Dust and Rain" begins with a woman's story of life at sea. The final track, "Far Gone/Big Sky" is a 16-minute piece that wanders between lilting melody and ominous space, the albums best piece. The improvised music on this record is intelligent and subtle, providing a consistent listen. ~ Marc Gilman
THE LAST PLACE TO GO are live recordings taken from the European tour of Touch & Go artists who were performing the soundtrack of the film documentary DUTCH HARBOR: WHERE THE SEA BREAKS ITS BACK.

The Wire (1/99, p.49) - "...it remains resolutely low key but compulsive, an unclassifiable mixture of jazz and avant rock....Although this music acknowledges its filmic origins, it ultimately transcends them, taking on an independent life that reflects the intuitive nature of the project." CMJ (11/09/98, p.22) - "offering music of stark, icy beauty...the mood is set so well that your ears become more attuned and appreciative..." Last Place To Go album
$38.49 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's most devoted fans. As a result, DREAMS is neither the definitive ...
| | Godspeed You Black Emperor F# A# (Infinity) CD (1998)
Last Place To Go CD music
$11.89 "We are trapped in the belly of this horrible machine, and the machine is bleeding to death." Few albums begin with such promise and foreboding, but this first full-length from Canadian genius collective Godspeed You Black Emperor! succeeds in the first few moments. F# A# (Infinity) contains three compositions that run the gamut from grotesque to sublime. The term "composition" seems an appropriate one to use as this band does not write songs. Each piece is at least 14 minutes in length, consisting of three to four sections. The band, a nine-member unit consisting of guitar, drums, bass, strings, keyboard, marimbas, and woodwinds, intersperses voice-over narrative with sprawling instrumental melodies. The arrangements move slowly, building from hushed silence to cathartic ...

| | American Flyer/Spirit Of A Women CD (2004)
Last Place To Go album
$13.59 Originally released on United Artists. Includes liner notes by Richie Unterberger.
American Flyer has long been a favorite of singer/songwriter, L.A. country-rock, and '70s soft rock aficionados, partially because of the group's supergroup status, but chiefly because the music they made was very, very good. That pedigree was indeed impressive, with the four members consisting of former Pure Prairie League member Craig Fuller, Eric Kaz of the Blues Magoos, Doug Yule of the Velvet Underground, and Steve Katz, formerly of Blood, Sweat & Tears -- maybe not Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in terms of marquee name recognition, but surely a collection of gifted and respected singer/songwriters who complemented each other nicely. While they had some modest ...
