Moore's debut as a songwriter; an outstanding release, featuring Peter Ostroushko and Radislav Lorkovic. Dave steps out with "Just a Dog" (heavy Greg Brown sound), "Over My Shoulder," and "God Moves on the Water." Highly recommended. ~ Chip Renner

Purchase Over My Shoulder CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Robbie Fulks South Mouth CD (1997)
Over My Shoulder album
$12.49 Chicago's Robbie Fulks may be the standard-bearer of alternative country, but you don't need a subscription to No Depression to enjoy his music. Any fan of real country will find cause to rejoice here. Fulks's second release, SOUTH MOUTH is a broader record than his first. The common threads connecting the Western Swing numbers, honky tonkers and sullen hill country ballads are witty lyrics, heartache, and a biting sense of humor. On "I Told Her Lies" his tongue is so far up his cheek it's a wonder he hasn't swallowed it. "You Wouldn't Do That To Me" and "South Richmond Girl" have a haunting vulnerability ...
| | Butch Hancock Firewater... Seeks It's Own Level CD (1981)
Over My Shoulder CD music
$13.39 Butch Hancock's discography is somewhat difficult to piece together. Many of his albums originally appeared on the small Rainlight label, and while a number of these albums have been reissued on CD, some have not. Firewater is Hancock's fourth album, a thrown-together live set recorded at the Alamo Lounge in Austin in 1980 (and released the following year). Although recorded live, only "The Wind's Dominion" had shown up on his earlier solo albums. "If You Were a Bluebird" would become a Hancock standard, but the standout tune here is ...

| | Minus 5 I Don't Know Who I Am CD (2003) Let The War Against Music
Over My Shoulder album
$13.85 Although Scott McCaughey pays his bills as a loyal R.E.M. sideman, the longtime Young Fresh Fellows frontman's Minus 5 project has allowed him to explore his fundamental pop/rock leanings with colleague Peter Buck on albums like 2001's acclaimed Let the War Against Music Begin. Recorded in tandem with that set, I Don't Know Who I Am -- a limited-edition disc reportedly restricted to a pressing of just 2,000 copies -- is far darker and more experimental, as evidenced by the set launcher, "There Is No Music." Meshing a slide guitar with a brooding lo-fi feel, the song's alt-country leanings uneasily shift into the electronic-tinged "Myrna Loy." While there are contagious moments like "Rooting for the Plague" and the profane singalong "I Don't Want to Fuck Off Anymore," tunes like the heady "Disaster Nurse Fang" and "Dear Employer" (which is recycled ...
| | Pete Anderson Daredevil CD (2004)
Over My Shoulder CD music
$9.69 Pete Anderson's third solo outing has been a long time coming, and one gets the distinct impression that it's the album he's been itching to make all along. Given that Daredevil is completely instrumental, the guitar geeks already have something to salivate about. But there's much more to it than that. Anderson played the vast majority of instruments, with help in a few places from multi-instrumentalist Skip Edwards and minimal assistance from trumpeter Lee Thornberg and fiddler Donny Reed as well. There's also some string work performed by some mysterious entity know as "the Skipper." If the Latin Playboys were an instrumental country band, they would almost certainly sound something like this. While it's true that Anderson's guitaristry is signature to all he does, he understands dynamic, ...
| | Ralph Stanley, II Pretty Girls, City Lights CD (2000)
Over My Shoulder music CDs
$13.19 The Ralph Stanley name has got to be quite a burden for a young bluegrass singer, but Ralph Stanley II (who plays guitar and sings with his father's band, the Clinch Mountain Boys) continues to bear it gracefully on his second solo album. His voice, a rich, relaxed baritone, couldn't be more different from his father's, and in fact it's a pretty unusual lead voice for bluegrass in general. But it does bear some resemblance to that of his late uncle Carter, and that gives an eerie beauty to the songs on which he and his father sing in harmony, such as "Pretty Girls, City Lights" and "I'll Just Catch a Train and Ride." The elder Stanley's hard, brittle banjo (which we seem to be hearing ...
| | Harry Reser Banjo Crackerjax 1922-1930 CD (1992)
Over My Shoulder songs
$14.75 The music on this highly entertaining CD is much more of a group effort than the title would suggest. Make no mistake, Harry Reser was one of the great banjo virtuosos, although his style was totally of the strummed, plectrum variety without a trace of the mystic quality of Appalachian banjo or the fingerpicking stunts of bluegrass players. With the banjo's rapid sound decay and complete lack of fortitude in certain registers, ...
