Recorded live at The Holywell Music Room, Oxford, England on October 15, 1994.
Fans of Simpson's meld of traditional Celtic and the blues and spirituals of African-Americans can get a taste of a Simpson performance in this one-man acoustic show, performed at the Holywell Music Room at Oxford in October 1994. The artist is in excellent form throughout. His acoustic guitar is the perfect backdrop for his smoky voice. The songs are uniformly superb, whether from traditional sources or Simpson's own pen. Especially effective is "Lilith," which he dedicates to victims of bigotry and violence, and the opening "Dreanitime," written for and about Nipper Kapirigi, tribal elder of the Australian Kakadu tribe. ~ Ross Boissoneau

| | Allman Brothers Band Dreams CDs (1989) Box Set
Live
$38.09 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough ...
| | Poco Forgotten Trail (1969-74) CDs (1990)
Live
$15.29 This compilation contains 38 songs, including many new remixes from original master tapes, 6 previously unreleased songs, alternate versions of 3 others, and a comprehensive 36 page booklet, with historic liner notes and photos.
This excellent two-disc collection captures Poco's finest moments from the days when they were laying down the template for all the country-rock music that was to follow. It's hard to remember, but when the Eagles first hit the scene, they were thought by many to be a Poco-wannabe band. Listen to this set and you'll hear why. The Forgotten Trail (1969-1974) culls tracks from Poco's first eight albums, as well ...

| | Little Milton Blues 'N Soul CD (1974)
Live
$9.89 Having already recorded for both Sun and Chess Records, two of the most historically significant labels in the history of blues and rock, Little Milton signed to Stax in the early '70s, adding yet another heavyweight to his catalog. On Blues 'N' Soul, he is joined by many of the same musicians that backed him on his Stax studio debut, Waiting for Little Milton, including drummer Willie Hall, guitarist Bobby Manuel, bassist Willie Murphy, and pianist Lester Snell. An impassioned singer, Milton's early-'70s output indeed began to walk the fine line between the blues and soul of the album title, a fact accentuated by the sparkling touches of the Memphis Horns. Although there are only two originals in the set, the singer's interpretations of songs popularized by Charlie Rich ("Behind Closed Doors"), Linda ...

$16.95 The Modern label, as any fan of early R&B knows, was a hugely important record company in the 1940s and 1950s, recording a wealth of pivotal blues/R&B crossover artists. This compilation of two dozen 1946-1952 tracks from the Modern vaults is geared toward the hardcore collector of such sounds, 14 of the cuts seeing release for the first time here, and four others being previously issued alternate takes. Helen Humes, Little Willie Littlefield, and Jimmy Witherspoon are the only singers here with whom more casual R&B listeners might be acquainted, unless you count "Scatman," better known as the actor Scatman Crothers. So it's ...
