Steel Pole Bath Tub is the morphinated equivalent of Swervedriver feedback-funk. Or a low-pitched rock hammock swaying over hardcore underage America. Either way, they're an interesting bunch of Montanans who frequently get the grunge tag, but play a more esoteric, Dinosaur Jr.-goes-metal style of indie music. From goth temple drumming to bassist Dale Flattum's L7 vocal fixations, Lurch/Butterfly Love is a wonderful cliché-ridden pileup of unproven ability, nonsense noise put through a staggered pace and the band's own beliefs in a pre-Seattle, free-market music scene. In the early '80s, a new musical movement, dubbed "The New Wave of British Metal," swept across England. The conspirators include such heavy bands as Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Saxon, and Def Leppard, but Judas Priest is often credited as the originator and leader of the pack. The Bardo Pond brothers, John and Michael Gibbons, team with bandmembers Clint Takeda and Jason Kourkonis for this two-track, 69-minute loopy, expansive, free-form foray into acid-drenched psychedelia called Baikal. The sticker on the package refers to Last Exit, but this is about as far as it gets from that dense space, no matter how outside it gets. One can think more in terms of the improvisational aspects of the Bevis Frond or a more guitar-centric Grails for this puppy.
