Originally and notoriously known as Lysol before the company behind said household product had something to say on the matter (early copies with the original information can be found), Melvins was in many ways the pinnacle of the band at that point. Besides being the full-length farewell to indie rock labels, at least for a few years, it also showed an ambition that arguably they wouldn't have been to fulfill while on Atlantic. Though there are six separate songs on the disc, it is mastered and assembled as one megacomposition, in ways making it the perfect counterpart to the previous year's solo projects. The logical extension of the sheer monstrosity of the band's work up to that time, with longer and longer songs, its first two parts alone are jawdroppers. "Hung Bunny," which takes up the first third of the whole half-hour effort, begins with Osbourne's slabs of feedback and wordless vocals, with only very occasional drum-and-bass hits punctuating them. They rev up in full toward the end as the song shifts into "Roman Dog Bird," which easily stakes a claim as being the most Sabbath-like number the band had yet done -- huge, moving at a snail's pace, and with Osbourne's already on-the-edge vocals flanged and distorted like crazy. One of the most interesting things about Melvins is that in among the mayhem, there are two cover versions included -- both equally understandable sources of inspiration, both comprehensively Melvin-ized. Flipper was an obvious role model for the Melvins' slow-as-it-goes rumble, thus the trudging treatment of "Sacrifice" here. Meanwhile, none other than Alice Cooper himself gets the nod with "The Ballad of Dwight Fry," which actually slots into the whole presentation scarily well (and displays, wonder of wonders, subtlety). ~ Ned Raggett

Melvins include: Matt Lukin.(Jan./Feb.,1992) - "...Here it is, a reissue of their infamous debut single. Kiss meets The Swans in a bathtub of opium. A MUST for all fans..."

5 stars Sludge Rock at it's finest!
If you like (or love)bands like Boris, Sleep, Grief, or Winter...you will love this! I had a difficult time finding this disk, but CD Universe had it at a great price! This disk is one of my favorites!

4 stars Stoner Sludge Rock from some of it's founders
This CD was originally titled "Lysol" but they were forced to change it. The cool thing about this one is that it's all one track. Yup, you gotta listen to the whole thing to hear all the songs....none of this track skipping stuff. It's really about 6 diffeent songs and theyre all great. Meaty guitars, growling, farty basslines, and the amazing drumming of Dale Crover are on full display as they grind their way through what sounds like a live setlist. There's even an Alice Cooper cover, but I won't tell you which. If you like the Melvins than you had better own this one as it defines their early sound the best.

Melvins Ozma/Gluey Porch Treatments CD  (1989)

Melvins album
CD $10.75  4 stars Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
Years before the term "grunge rock" was coined, the Melvins were laying down the style's heavy, plodding foundation in the Pacific Northwest. This disc presents two of the notorious trio's earliest records, 1989's OZMA and its predecessor, GLUEY PORCH TREATMENTS. One of OZMA's initial tracks, "At a Crawl," perfectly describes both the song and the group's overall sound, with frontman Buzz "King Buzzo" Osbourne's guitar riffs looming and lurching forward like a hobbled-yet-determined predator. Drummer Dale Crover (who recorded with Nirvana during this period) offers up booming start-and-stop rhythms on "Agonizer," a tune that also calls attention to Buzzo's over-the-top and exceedingly quirky vocals. (Oddly enough, a metallic cover of the Cars' "Candy-O" is featured here, as well.) Although other Melvins outings may be more concise and consistent, this 34-track double-album set finds the influential band building up steam and providing a crucial example of its standing as a musical bridge between the heavy metal of Sabbath and Nirvana's take on punk yet to come. The cassette version of "Ozma" does not contain "Gluey Porch Treatments". It does, however, contain one bonus track. Melvins: King Buzzo (vocals, guitar); Lori (bass guitar); Dale (drums). Melvins: Buzz (vocals, guitar), Lori (bass), Dale (drums, background vocals).

Released in 1991, the same year as Nirvana's NEVERMIND, the Melvins' BULLHEAD reveals why one of these lauded Washington State bands went on to massive fame, and the other remained--well, the Melvins. While Kurt Cobain was admittedly highly influenced by the Melvins, particularly the guitar work of frontman Buzz "King Buzzo" Osbourne, he took the elder group's heavy sound and lined it with brilliant pop hooks. As is apparent on BULLHEAD, the Melvins had zero interest in accessibility, and opted to keep things slow, sludgy, and straightforward, valuing the power of the almighty riff above all else. Drummer Dale Crover and bassist Lorax lay down a mighty foundation for King Buzzo's dense guitar lines and Ozzy-style vocals, with tracks such as the lurching "Boris" and the searing "If I Had an Exorcism" showcasing the ensemble's Sabbath-gone-minimalist aesthetic. The record's true highlights, however, can be found on "It's Shoved" and "Zodiac," the former a powerful dose of metallic stomps and rumbles, and the latter a surging tune where the trio picks up the pace to crushing effect. Those looking for the prototypical Melvins album will find it here in all of its pile-driving splendor.

To essay a concise, surefooted summation of the Melvins' catalog would be reductive at best, and laughable at worst. This is, of course, underground rock's trio of pranksters -- unpredictable and capable of complete musical about-faces in the turn of a measure. That said, Houdini is about as close as one gets to a representative Melvins album, and it vividly captures the band's unreconstructed power, vision, and musical strangeness. During the early-'90s purge of hair rock and candy-footed funk metal, the Melvins, as with many other acts, seemed fair game for a major label in search of another post-Nirvana gold mine. With Kurt Cobain's assistance, the band was snatched up -- and summarily dropped (after three brilliant albums, this being the first) -- by Atlantic. Though Houdini's immediate predecessors, Eggnog and Bullhead, pried open a few screwball chasms in the Melvins' syrupy distillation of Sabbath riffage and Flipper's noisy anti-punk, it was this album that displayed the full fruition of the outfit's sonic breadth, from the cough-syrup river drag of "Night Goat" to the revved-up "Honey Bucket," and from the creepy "Joan of Arc" to the glue-damaged "Sky Pup." Ringleader King Buzzo's riffs are stretched -- taffy-like -- to meltdown, and at other times they are razor sharp. Either way, they abound with a lumbering, lurching power. With their voluminous output and determination to continuously expand their sound regardless of musical trends, the Melvins oeuvre has begun to rival -- at least on paper -- the career arcs of Frank Zappa and Neil Young. ~ Patrick Kennedy Live Recording Recorded at Brilliant Studios and Razor's Edge, San Francisco, California; Laundry Room, Seattle, Washington. Melvins Stoner Witch CD  (1994)

CD $8.39  4.2 stars Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
Released during the Melvins' mid-1990s major-label stint (a move orchestrated by longtime friend and supporter Kurt Cobain), STONER WITCH finds the Washington State ensemble reveling in glacial grandeur, slowly deploying juggernaut riffs and pummeling rhythms. As always, "King Buzzo" Osborne leads the group with his gruff vocals and alternately stinging and sludgy guitar lines, as evinced on the thrillingly ominous "Queen" and the stomping "Revolve," tracks that also highlight drummer Dale Crover's powerful percussion. Featuring the Melvins' trusty tendency for absurdity (see the song titles "Goose Freight Train" and "Magic Pig Detective"), WITCH gets weirder as it goes along, winding down with the punk-like burst of "June Bug" followed by "Lividity," more than nine minutes of near-silence capped off by jarring noise. Easily one of the Melvins' finest outings, STONER WITCH is an uncompromising alt-metal classic that is essential for any self-respecting fan of the venerable Pacific Northwest band. Live Recording Recorded at A&M Studios, Hollywood, California. Personnel: Buzz Osborne (vocals, guitar); Mark D. (guitar, bass guitar, background vocals). Audio Mixer: Joe Barresi. Recording information: A&M Studios, Hollywood, CA. Photographer: Annalisa. Unknown Contributor Role: Scott Humphrey. Melvins: King B. (vocals, guitar, bass); Mark D. Melvins Maggot CD  (1999)

Love 'em or hate 'em, you have to give the Melvins credit for issuing perhaps the most challenging release of their lengthy, mega-influential (Nirvana, Soundgarden, etc.) career with 1999's The Maggot. Their first release on Mike Patton's Ipecac label, The Maggot is the inaugural release of a trio of albums that were recorded at the same time and issued over the span of several months, the other releases being The Bootlicker and The Crybaby. Unlike most other alternative/heavy metal bands of the '80s and '90s who eventually experimented with other musical forms and approaches, the Melvins have stuck to their patented brutal and detuned sludge-rock throughout the years, and The Maggot is no different. Guitarist King Buzzo is still the undisputed master of the monstrous guitar riff (perhaps second only to Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi), as proven by such cuts as "AMAZON," "Manky," a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "The Green Manalishi," and the torturous album closer "See How Pretty, See How Smart." Strangely, all eight songs on the CD are sequenced in a way so that the listener can skip to the middle of each track. ~ Greg Prato Recorded at Louder Studios, San Francisco, California in January 1999. Personnel: Dale Crover (vocals, guitar, drums); King Buzzo, Buzz Osborne (vocals, guitar). Recording information: Louder Studios, San Francisco, CA (01/1999). The Melvins: King Buzzo (vocals, guitar, bass); Dale Crover (vocals, guitar, drums); Kevin Rutmanis (vocals, bass, slide bass).

Bootlicker, the second installment of the Melvins' 1999 trilogy of albums, displays the lighter, more melodic side of the group's sound. Unlike its predecessor, The Maggot, there are clean and distorted guitar tones and a relatively laid-back feel, as on the song "Let It All Be." While not quite as eclectic as Stag, Bootlicker reaffirms the sonic twists and turns the Melvins have at their disposal. ~ Heather Phares Live Recording Recorded at Louder Studios, San Francisco, California in January 1999. Arranger Ray Conniff's particular brand of easy listening maintained a dedicated fan base that was similar to Mitch Miller's. As arrangers, both Conniff and Miller were never shy about covering a quality song. It didn't matter who wrote it, what decade it came from, or what style of music it was. A good song is a good song. Case in point: Both of these Conniff albums were released around the same time in 1974 but spotlight popular tunes from two very different eras. The Happy Sound of Ray Conniff relies on standards from the '40s and '50s like "Chattanooga Choo Choo," "In the Mood," and "Half as Much," while The Way We Were includes then current hits of the early '70s by Paul Simon, Elton John, Helen Reddy, and Barbra Streisand. 22 tracks in all with over 60 minutes of music makes this an attractive package for fans. ~ Al Campbell Originally released on Columbia. Apple
Mother Love Bone Apple CD  (1990)

Melvins music CDs
CD $13.79  5 stars
APPLE is the 1990 debut release by legendary grunge rockers Mother Love Bone and includes the tracks "Holy Roller," "Man Of Golden Words," and two extra tracks, including "Lady Godiva Blues." Fair or unfair, Mother Love Bone is destined to be described as "the band Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard were in before Pearl Jam." But in fact, Apple is a solid offering that can stand on its own merits. Even if Pearl Jam had never come about, Apple would be well worth obtaining. Though MLB proudly declared its allegiance to Seattle in a 1990 interview with Cash Box, Apple really doesn't fall into the alternative rock category or inspire comparisons to bands like Nirvana, Alice in Chains, or Soundgarden. Rather, MLB were clearly Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith devotees, and it's hard to miss the influence of Zep's Robert Plant and Aerosmith's Steven Tyler when lead singer Andrew Wood tears into such intense yet melodic hard rock boogie as "Capricorn Sister," "Stardog Champion," and "Captain Hi-Top." This was a band with great potential, but sadly, one can only speculate on what would have happened had it had a chance to develop. ~ Alex Henderson Includes the original album tracks and original artwork plus two rare bonus tracks, digitally remastered, this album will be Lemon Recordings first release and is a Rock Collector and Grunge fan must have. CD contains bonus track. Personnel: Andrew "Tiny" Wood (vocals, piano); Bruce Fairweather, Stone Gossard (guitar); Greg Gilmore (drums). Recording information: London Bridge Studio, Seattle, WA (1989); The Record Plant, Sausalito, CA (1989).
