The 1970s saw the rise of a number of punk rock bands in the United States and the United Kingdom. The groups took rock & roll in a new direction, relying heavily on a cacophony of sounds to express their angst about life at the close of the 20th century. Many fans consider the Irish punk rock group the Radiators to have been among the best of the genre. The personnel, which changed some over the years, hailed from Dublin, and included Philip Chevron on guitar and vocals, Steve Rapid on vocals, Peter Holidai on guitar and vocals, James Crash on drums, Mark Megaray on bass, keyboards, and vocals, Ruan O'Lochlainn on saxophone, Tony Visconti on synthesizer and vocals, and Cyril Jordan on guitar. The group recorded only two CDs before disbanding in 1981. Their 1977 debut album was entitled TV Tube Heart, recorded as the Radiators From Space. Two years later, the Radiators released Ghostown. Cockles & Mussels: The Very Best of the Radiators culls the play lists of those two recordings to present the group's most outstanding songs. "Television Screen," "Walking Home Alone Again," "Try and Stop Me," "They're Looting in the Town," "Stranger Than Fiction," and "Let's Talk About the Weather" are among the tunes the listener will hear on this compilation. ~ Rose of Sharon Witmer

Cockles & Mussels: The Very Best Of songs
$8.85 Singer Mike Scott emerges here as a gifted troubadour, a mode he'd explore more fully years later in his solo work. Where he once spun grand statements framed by booming drums and echoing guitars, here he makes simple romantic observations backed by fiddles and acoustic guitars. A surprising nod to country roots pops up as well, with "Has Anybody Here Seen Hank?," but, in the end, FISHERMAN'S BLUES is closer to the Celtic soul of ...
| | Fiction Factory Throw The Warped Wheel Out CD (1984) (Import) Germany
Cockles & Mussels: The Very Best Of album
$14.45 Any interest at all in Fiction Factory's Throw the Warped Wheel Out will most likely originate from the album's opening track, "(Feels Like) Heaven". With its church bell synths and Kevin Patterson's brooding vocals, "(Feels Like) Heaven" is an `80s new wave classic. Often mistaken for a love song, "(Feels Like) Heaven" is about the exhilaration following the disintegration of a painful, loveless relationship. The lyrics seethe with corrosive angst: "Twist the bones until they snap/ I scream but no one knows." Like Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart", "(Feels Like) Heaven" deceptively buries its anguish beneath toe-tapping keyboards. However, one song cannot carry the weight of an entire LP; fortunately, Fiction Factory were talented enough to craft worthy successors. The light funk of "Heart & Mind" is derivative yet catchy, recalling Heaven 17. The heartbreaking "Panic", with its somber refrain of "Laughing, crying," should have been used in one of John Hughes' teen films; one can easily imagine Molly Ringwald wiping tears from her eyes after ...
