5 stars Absolute Perfection!
The English all star cast has certainly done Dickens proud. Brilliant screenplay with added personal bits made this one my all time favorite.

5 stars A very good interpretation.
Patrick Stewart is well known for his shakespeare performances. And it is evident in this production that his understanding of the english novelist comes through. If you have not seen this production, it is worth your time.

2 stars Wooden Christmas Carol
This is a tired and uninspired production. Unfortunately Patrick Stewart's performance is very wooden and one feels he is reading his lines from cue cards. There are many better versions of "A Christmas Carol", including the one with George C. Scott, Albert Finney, or even The Muppets.

Filmed in Shrewsbury, England, this version of Dickens' beloved classic is considered by many to be the best. All the performances are excellent, but George C. Scott makes the often-played Ebenezer Scrooge his very own. Highly recommended. This 100 minute science fiction/fantasy feature film is a DVD starring George C. Scott, Frank Finlay, and Angela Plea sence.

This collection includes "The Tell-Tale Heart" (25 min.) - A stunning adaptation which brings to life what is perhaps Poe's best known short story. "A Journey in Verse" (34 min.) - Poe blessed American literature with some of the most striking poetic imagery ever created. Ten poems are performed: To My Mother, The Conqueror Worm, Annabel Lee, Eldorado, Evening Star, To Helen, The Haunted Palace, Israfel, The City in the Sea, The Raven. Albert Finney shines as the title character in this musical version of Charles Dickens' timeless tale of Ebenezer Scrooge, a lonely miser who is visited on Christmas Eve by three spirits who teach him lessons of love and giving. Fun choreography, rich set design, memorable songs, and a distinguished supporting cast (led by Sir Alec Guinness as Jacob Marley's ghost) lend considerable clout to this perennial favorite. With the release of Robert Altman's M*A*S*H in 1970, a new form of comedy was born, one that would help to forever change the face of cinema. Altman's audacious film reflected the American counterculture's growing distrust of religion and government in the late 1960s and early 1970s, resulting in one of the biggest box office smashes of its time. Introducing the techniques he would employ throughout his storied career--overlapping dialogue, a constantly moving camera with a heavy amount of zooming, and a bold combination of frank subject matter with cynical humor--Altman immediately vaulted himself to Hollywood's upper ranks. Based on the novel by Richard Hooker, M*A*S*H follows a group of Mobile Army Surgical Hospital officers as they perform surgery and pass the time just miles from the front lines of the Korean conflict. Led by sardonic captains "Hawkeye" Pierce (Donald Sutherland) and "Trapper" John McIntyre (Elliott Gould), the film has the feel of an absurd three-ring circus. Other characters include the uptight nurse "Hot Lips" O'Houlihan (Sally Kellerman), the confused Major Frank Burns (Robert Duvall), the troubled Captain "Painless" Waldowski (John Shuck), and the simpleminded Captain "Duke" Forrest (Tom Skerritt). Altman's decision to present his film as a series of loosely connected vignettes rather than a traditionally unfolding narrative perfectly captures the freewheeling spirit so unique to early-'70s cinema. A good but slightly ineffectual man tries to off himself after an error that really wasn't his fault. In Christmas Carol fashion, his crusty-but-lovable guardian angel shows up to give him a tour of the world without his presence, and it isn't a pretty place. Moral courage, small-town American life, civic cooperation, and family love are glorified; corporate greed and self-involvement are vilified; at the climax, a blanket of snow like spun sugar makes everything pure and clean like redemption itself. Michael J. Fox catapulted into superstardom--and created one of the most beloved television characters of all time--in the 1980s sitcom FAMILY TIES. Created by TV impresario Gary David Goldberg (LOU GRANT, THE BOB NEWHART SHOW), the series offered a clever take on the generation gap through the family interactions of two former '60s hippies, public-television producer Steven Keaton (Michael Gross) and his architect wife, Elyse (Meredith Baxter). Together, they struggle to retain their leftist ideals while raising three radically divergent children in suburban Columbus, Ohio: tomboy Jennifer (Tina Yothers); ditzy mallrat Mallory (Justine Bateman); and, most notably, Wall Street Journal-reading young Republican Alex P. Keaton (Fox), who served as the series' main comedic foil. A fun and warmhearted throwback to the greed-is-good decade, FAMILY TIES is resurrected in this collection of the series' first four seasons. Standard Screen; Soundtrack English
