Richie Ray and Bobby Cruz get together for a live recording that magnificently captures the moments of joy of their most productive years, with the support of a superb band composed of Puerto Rico's finest musicians. Richie Ray's musicianship remains as fresh as ever and Bobby Cruz's tone seems untainted after all these years. This exciting production delivers the goods with aplomb; "Agúzate," "Sonido Bestial," "El Diferente," "Señora," "A Mi Manera" (with special guest Miki Vimari), "Mr. Trumpet Man," and "Juan en la Ciudad" were the obligatory material that kept this band highly active over almost three decades. This recording attests to that excitement as a representative sample of their rapport with one of their favorite followers: Puerto Rico. ~ José A. Estévez, Jr.
Includes liner notes by Rafael Ithier, Luis Vigoreaux Jr., Anthony Soto, Rafo Muniz, Cucco Pena, Arturo Ortiz, Edgardo Soto, Frankie Puello, Myruam Nunez, Junior Lozada and Oscar Diaz.

Un Sonido Bestial
$8.39 After honing his salsa chops in the 1970s in lengthy stints with the bands of Ray Barretto and Willie Colon, Panamanian Ruben Blades formed his own band, Seis del Solar. BUSCANDO AMERICA, Seis del Solar's first album, introduces Blades's unique fusion of salsa, rock, and Caribbean rhythms, and the full range of Blades' literate, witty lyrics and expressive vocal flair. Though the politically pointed angle of Blades's words will be lost on those with a language barrier (Blades sings only in his native Spanish), the inventive, accessible nature of his music should appeal to many.

Un Sonido Bestial
$21.79 In 1979, Raoul Diomande approached the Cuban record label Areito with the idea that Cuban musicians could play son, cha cha, and mambo as well or better than anyone else. Juan Pablo Torres, trombonist, arranger, and producer for the state label, began recruiting musicians. The musicians who played in these loose jam sessions spanned three generations from over ten different bands, including representatives from most of the greatest bands of Cuban 20th century music. Playing in extended jams based on the most skeletal of arrangements, the musicians fill the songs with an energy pulled from every region of Cuba. Instrumental voices rise and are echoed. Phrases are suggested and responded to, evolve and fade, replaced by other voices suggesting other themes. Occasionally an individual voice rises into a powerful expression of personality, only to incorporate a passage of a familiar Cuban melody, and pass the conversation on. Over these two discs, the ...

Un Sonido Bestial
$8.45 "Buscando America" opens with wafts of foreboding, Tyner-esque piano before easing into Blades' stirring, synth-laden call for Pan-American unity. With a piercing trombone arrangement that recalls Blades' days in Willie Colon's band, "La Marea" is a sinewy cut of salsa that explicates all the seasick tosses-and-turns of a choppy love affair. The singer's early ...
