(1 Customer Review)
Jed begins an important transition in the Goo Goo Dolls' career, refining their mixture of aggressive punk energy and melodic power pop hooks. Most importantly, guitarist Johnny Rzeznik occasionally sings lead for the first time in a move that would pave the way for the band's creative and commercial ascent. His contributions on "Up Yours" and the hilarious, acoustic "James Dean" provide some of the album's most memorable moments, while bassist Robby Takac lends his wonderfully raspy voice to revved-up tracks such as "Out of Sight," "Sex Maggot," and "Road to Salinas." Also included are boisterous covers of the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" and Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Down on the Corner," which marks the group's first collaboration with Buffalo lounge singer The Incredible Lance Diamond. While not the Goo Goo Dolls' best album, Jed hints at the greatness that would come with its follow-up, Hold Me Up. ~ Michael Frey

Jed Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) The Goo Goo Dolls wicked side Having first heard "Gutterflower" and becoming a Goo addict, I sought to find every album they ever produced. After purchasing "Jed," I was amazed at the music before me. The album is very fast and not like the Goo's previous music, however, I enjoyed the album. To know that the Goo Goo Dolls started out as a garage band and evolved into something wonderful as they are today is great. Being a John Rzeznik fan myself, I looked forward to his songs. However, he only sings two, "Up Yours" w(which is very funny) and "James Dean," a song where he critizies his own life and wishes he was someone else. This album is a must for any fan of bass player Robby Takac, and even though his voice is not my favorite in the world, I do have to hand it to him, he does do a nice job at producing some great music.

Jed album
$11.39 The Goos' third album was in part seen as their commercial step up, though in fact the real breakthrough didn't come along for a few more years. It's little surprise why there was more of a push for this album, though. If it wasn't as powerfully distinct as Nirvana's Nevermind, Hold Me Up is as much a product of '80s underground punk and indie (and dollops of bands like Cheap Trick) as its more famous counterpart. The Replacements Jr. tag that dogged the Goos in early years still has a connection here, unquestionably. But considering at that point Paul Westerberg was starting down his road toward tasteful irrelevance, Hold Me Up is the perfect stand-in for those who wanted a little more energy with their catchy but emotional rock. If anything, Rzeznik's agreeably ragged and certainly Westerberg-inspired vocals start to really come into their own even more than before, now a great contrast to Takac's amiable brattishness. The latter can have his own impact, though -- check out the opening "Laughing" or "So Outta Line," ...
| | Goo Goo Dolls Superstar Car Wash CD (1993)
Jed CD music
$6.45 The hard rock rawness of Buffalo's Goo Goo Dolls makes Superstar Car Wash an album that is high on amicable guitar riffs and attractive hooks, with an edge that never goes away. All the choruses are sandwiched perfectly between the crunching throttle of electric guitar and pleasing rock rhythms, changing pace and style just a notch in each of the 14 songs. Heavy but far from pretentious, songs like "Fallin' Down," "Cuz You're Gone," and "We Are the Normal," co-written by Paul Westerberg, combine pleasing elements of rough harmonies with infectious runs of six-string grit. John Rzeznik's vocals resonate with a reckless, punk-soaked ardor that lifts their music above and beyond the ...
| | Goo Goo Dolls Boy Named Goo CD (1995)
Jed music CDs
$9.05 All songs written by John Rzeznik or Goo Goo Dolls except "Disconnected" (Mann/Piranha/Secrist/Sinister) and "Slave Girl" (M. Blood/J. Jakimyszyn).
A BOY NAMED GOO shows that the Goo Goo Dolls have soaked up all the elements necessary to make them a great guitar band. The album's title clearly harkens back to Johnny Cash's "A Boy Named Sue" and its narrator's search for the people who named him; but the Goo Goo Dolls aren't taking that path. They already know their past (straight-ahead post-punk), and A BOY NAMED GOO plots out their present.
With a smart-alec, bar-band approach reminiscent of the Replacements, the Goo Goo Dolls rage about being "Disconnected"--that "someone pulled the plug." They sound worried on "Long Way Down," realizing that "I don't think I'll make it on my own." "Burnin' Up" offers another key to the Goo Goo Dolls' garage sound by adding a smidgeon of Husker Du (the Bob Mould guitar chimes and Grant Hart's melodic vocal sense are properly reproduced). But it's on the acoustic "Name" that the Dolls' own context emerges. The song complains about "growing up way too fast" in a culture where everything seems borrowed and "re-runs are our history."
This is what makes the Goo ...

$11.65 "Iris" was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. "Black Balloon" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
On first hearing, the Goo Goo Dolls sound like the Replacements' distant cousins, full of trashy rock bravado tempered by intelligent, often tender lyricism and a penchant for combining ringing acoustic guitars with dirtier sounds for a rich sonic stew. In fact, DIZZY UP THE GIRL finds the Dolls ...

Jed album
$10.79 Additional personnel includes: Tim Pierce (guitar); Kim Bullard, Doug McKean (programming); Luis Conte, Greg Suran, Jamie Muhoberac, Rob Cavallo.
When the Goo Goo Dolls solidified their place in the pop mainstream with 1998's DIZZY UP THE GIRL, one of the casualties was frontman Johnny Rzeznik's marriage. For the band's 2002 follow-up GUTTERFLOWER, Rzeznik channeled his feelings into a set of songs steeped in the Goo's mastery of hook-ridden, rock-edged pop. Lines like "How does it feel when you're out on your own/And now it's too late to come home" on the Pearl Jam-flavored "What A Scene" and "I'm torn in pieces/I'm blind and waiting for you" on the catchy and whip-smart "Big Machine" are self-explanatory. For more emotional turbulence, see the mandolin-soaked delicacy of "Sympathy" and the epic "Truth Is A Whisper" with its ...

Jed CD music
$8.79 When Dr. Dre opened the 1988 classic, STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON, with the proclamation, "You are now about to witness the strength of street knowledge," N.W.A. was issuing their own unapologetic parental advisory--though perhaps not the one Tipper Gore had in mind. N.W.A. was one of the first groups in the rap genre to excite suburban white kids and scare their parents on such a mass scale. Though Ice Cube, MC Ren, Eazy-E, Yella, and Dr. Dre spent less than half ...
