(6 Customer Reviews)
The debut from these Canadian thrash-metal innovators is raw and brutal, bearing little resemblance to the well-oiled machine that emerged years later. Though distinctly different from the refined prog-metal of the band's 1989 masterpiece NOTHINGFACE, Voivod's early primal rumblings were part of the initial wave of thrash progenitors that included the likes of Bathory and Venom.
With the reissue of this album, Metal Blade pays homage to Snake and company with a three-disc collector's package that includes the remastered WAR & PAIN, along with lo-fi demos and live tracks culled from 1983-84. A third disc includes liner notes, artwork, a video, photos, and computer wallpaper and screensavers. Die-hard fans will be pleased with the homage paid to the early works of Voivod, whose roster would eventually include ex-Metallica bassist Jason Newsted, a longtime aficionado of the group.

| War And Pain Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews One of the heaviest albums ever I remember hearing the song VoiVod when this album was released in 1984 and it really hit me. There are things about this album that stand out and make it one of top 10 heavy releases IMO:
1. Heaviness - this album is so over the top heavy, the production is just loud.
2. Vocals - unique vocals - you can't understand a word he is saying - can't even tell it is English. This was always a good sign fpr a heavy band in 1984!
3. Original - songs are so original - there has never been anything that compares to the early VoiVod sound.
Unfortunately, I think they went downhill from here on. Their next album Rooarr was Ok but after that they became less heavy (still good though). Submitted by a reviewer (Vancouver, BC, CANADA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
scull crushing metal at its best this album is highly recommended for those of you who love thrash/speed metal. This album will rip your head of a defecate down your neck and you will beg for more Submitted by a reviewer (vancouver canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great, raw thrasher! My friend didn't like this album because it wasn't technical! so I bought it off him. This is a great raw thrasher I don't own any other voivod as of now but will soon invest. The production on this is suprisingly good. Snake is a cool singer, and piggy is also talented. Any fans of thrash should check this out (and avoid that rubbish generic power metal mind friend is so fond of!). this album's got a kind of punk sound to it Submitted by tim_thomson666 (Dunedin, New Zealand) Was This Review Helpful? War And Pain album
$68.69 More of a history lesson than a good listen in total, Muzik City is the story of Trojan, warts and all. Those looking for a good selection of the reggae label's best moments have plenty of other choices and might want to start with the great Tighten Up collections or wait for the 50th release in Trojan's three-CD series (a greatest-hits box to be compiled by votes from fans and due in 2004). Anyone who is a die-hard Trojan enthusiast will find plenty of surprises, secrets, and a really well done booklet to ...

| | Octavia Sperati Winter Enclosure CD (2005)
War And Pain music CDs
$12.09 Octavia Sperati has often been described as an "all-girl doom metal band from Bergen, Norway." Well, Octavia Sperati really is from Bergen, Norway, and they do have an all-female lineup. But Winter Enclosure, the band's first official full-length album, isn't really doom metal or stoner rock in the strict sense; they don't sound like Saint Vitus or Grief any more than they sound like Orange Goblin, Eyehategod, Goatsnake, Iron Monkey or Pentagram. What transpires on this aggressive but highly melodic and moody effort is really somewhere between gothic metal and goth rock; Winter Enclosure is more metallic than most goth rock but isn't as heavy ...
| | Spock's Beard Gluttons For Punishment: Live In 2005 CDs (2005)
War And Pain songs
$17.49 There are two points that go against Gluttons for Punishment. Number one: Spock's Beard already have several live albums out. Number two: who needs almost all of Octane in live form only two years after its release? Then again, there are also two arguments in favor of this double set: the group's indefatigable energy on stage and the fact that this is the first live document featuring Nick D'Virgilio as the group's frontman. Whether or not this album is essential to you depends solely on how you tally up these pros and cons. Granted, Octane is superior in all respects to Feel Euphoria, the group's first effort following the departure of original lead singer Neal Morse. Nevertheless, Gluttons for Punishment features too much of that album's material (the entire "A Flash Before My Eyes" suite, "NWC," "As Long as We Ride"), which is too new to have matured into something significantly different ...
