Flotsam & Jetsam: Eric Ak (vocals); Edward Carlson, Michael Gilbert (guitar, background vocals); Jason Newsted (bass, background vocals); Kelly David Smith (drums, background vocals). Recorded at Music Grinders, Eldorado, and Track Recording Studios, Hollywood, California. Flotsam & Jetsam (US): Eric A.K. (vocals); Edward Carlson, Michael Gilbert (guitar); Jason Newsted (bass guitar); Kelly David Smith (drums). Though a little rough in the production department, Flotsam & Jetsam's first album, Doomsday for the Deceiver, attempts both short bursts of thrashing intensity ("Desecrator," "Iron Tears") as well as extended, multi-part epics ("Metalshock" and the title track). Bassist and lyricist Jason Newsted occasionally attempts to squeeze too many words into some songs, but also displays a refreshing sense of humor (a rarity in this genre) on "Hammerhead" and "She Took an Axe." "U.S.L.W." is rather good but the nine-minute-plus title track is the best cut on the album, largely due to guitarist Michael Gilbert's very tasteful acoustic guitar intro. Overall, this is an important record for fans of early thrash metal. ~ Eduardo RivadaviaKerrang (Magazine) (p.51) - "[T]his masterpiece of epic speed metal is essential listening." | Doomsday For The Deceiver Music Doomsday For The Deceiver Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Classic heavy metal album This one is a classic. Jason Newstead had a good thing going before he jumped ship for Metallica. If you enjoy the thrashier side this one should be in your collection. CDUniverse ought to carry more of this band's back catalog in stock. They produced roughly 6 or 7 albums in total. Submitted by drudow (Lawrenceville, GA USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Instant Classic! One of my most favorite metal albums ever made! Not only does Jason Newstead showcase his greatest bass licks ever, but he also was the main writer of music & lyrics on this album as well. This album & thier next (No Place For Disgrace)also featuring Newstead, are two of the greatest metal albums of all time!Excellent musicians as well as Eric A.K. on vocals, a must own for any true metal fan!Even after the departure of Jason Newstead, this band has never ceased to amaze me. Doomsday For The Deceiver
$25.05 2cds-Ed & George Schuller
Personnel: Ran Blake (piano); Nicole Kampgen Schuller (alto saxophone); Ed Schuller (bass); George Schuller (drums, bells, sound effects). Principally recorded at The Sonic Temple, Roslindale, Massachussetts in 2000 & 2001. Includes liner notes by Gunther Schuller. Personnel: Ran Blake (piano); Nicole Kämpgen (alto saxophone); George Schuller (drums, bells). Recording information: Church of the Redeemer, Chestnut Hill, MA (01/03/2000-03/25/2001); The Sonic Temple, Rosindale, MA (01/03/2000-03/25/2001). There are few pianists -- or jazz musicians, period -- who straddle the line between form and free playing better than Ran Blake. As both composer and an interpreter of the canon, Blake dances with grace and aplomb. This set with George Schuller on drums and percussion and Ed Schuller on bass is a double CD that celebrates Blake in a rare trio setting. Usually he is heard either solo or duo, and rarely with a rhythm section of any kind. Disc one opens with three standards -- "Tangerine," "Nature Boy," and "Black Coffee" -- before visiting one of Blake's classics, "The Short Life of Barbara Monk." On all four of these selections, Blake leads the trio with an intimacy that comes out of a search for the perfect set of timbres (sonorities) with which to explore the lyric in the ...
| | Underminded Hail Unamerican! CD (2004)
Doomsday For The Deceiver
$11.49 It's not easy coming from a town where you're in a league of your own. Case in point, Underminded, who hail from San Diego, Calif., a city that's best known in the underground rock community as a fertile breeding ground of pop-punk acts for the past decade, or as the land of the avant-garde spock rock that's generally off most radars.Instead, Underminded had to form its own clique, since the foursome subscribes to neither genre of the border city's independent rock soundscape. What the group does present is a well-coordinated, punishing metal-based hardcore intensity, fueled solely by the abnormalities and unfortunate idiosyncrasies of society. Happy-go-lucky pop punk and freaked-out, angular experimentalism this is not. Enter hail unamerican!, Underminded's debut album, released via Los Angeles-based Kung Fu Records. Not only does hail unamerican! usher in a refreshingly new spirit to the Kung Fu roster - one that's decidedly more formidable, darker and aggressive than anything the established punk label has ever released - it also shatters any pre-conceived notions of what Underminded's locale has to offer. There are no bubble gum hooks or trendy, teased hair here, just the unequivocal truth, delivered like a technical knockout through a series of succinct tracks.Recorded at NRG Recording Studios in North Hollywood with producer Sergio Chavez (Velvet Revolver, Limp Bizkit, Evanescence), hail unamerican! isn't simply significant in concept, but also in execution. The instrumentation itself could stand alone - thunderous, drop-tuned rhythmic riffs and biting, critical lead lines all driven by wildly crushing drums - and casts a no-holds-barred attitude over the collection of tracks. Drop in the fraught, dire vocal delivery of Nick Martin, whose defiant prose attacks all senses with the unpredictable, ...
