Although Enigma Records was better known for its connection to the mid-'80s Paisley Underground scene (Rain Parade, Game Theory, etc.), the Los Angeles-based indie was also among the first to document the rebirth of glam metal, which overtook the L.A. club scene at the same time, by issuing the first album by Mötley Crüe, Poison, and others. The glam-poppy Lizzy Borden was also ran in the hair metal sweepstakes, but its debut album, 1985's Love You to Pieces, holds up better than many other documents from the era. The packaging, complete with faux-goth band logo and the requisite hot big-haired chick in lingerie, is crushingly obvious, and the entire album flirts with cliché. Lizzy Borden himself -- who like Alice Cooper adopted the band's name as his own -- sounds uncannily like Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson most of the time, and songs like "Council for the Cauldron" and "Rod of Iron" sound like Spinal Tap jokes. Yet there's an appealing freshness to this album despite the clichés. Drummer Joey Scott Harges and bassist Mike Davis play with the whiplash pacing of a hardcore punk band, and there's a tongue-in-cheek quality to the album that puts it over during all but the most inane passages. By the end of the band's career, Lizzy Borden would be indistinguishable from the dozens of other poodle-haired glam-metal bands on the Sunset Strip, but Love You to Pieces isn't half bad. ~ Stewart Mason

| Love You To Pieces Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) An Unsung Gem... I had this on vinyl and practically wore it out. What I remember from the first time I cracked open the seal and listened to it (back in 1985) was being totally blown away by the production. In a time where indie releases were a crap shoot production-wise, this disc stood out in the best way possible. Even now, 20+ years later, it still stands the test of time. Don't know why these guys never made it. It certainly wasn't the songs. "Save Me" should have been a huge hit. "Council for the Cauldron" kicks, "Rod of Iron" is smokin'...really, there's not a bum track to be found. Even though "American Metal" walks the tightrope of cheese, it's still okay. Lizzy's vocals are incredible...he can go from crooning to blood-curdling in a flash. One of the strongest voices from this era of metal.
Lizzy's other releases are worth searching out, but this one remains the best and most dangerous.
Now raise your fist and say "I love metal!" Submitted by World Famous Nobodies (Lititz, PA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.

Initial pressings included a bonus DVD featuring live performances and behind-the-scenes footage. Atreyu: Alex Varkatzas (vocals); Dan Jacobs, Travis Miguel (guitar); Chris Thomson (bass); Brandon Saller (drums). Additional personnel: Efrem Shulz (vocals); Andrea Shulz, Jaime Boepple (piano). By the time Atreyu's 2002 debut full-length SUICIDE NOTES AND BUTTERFLY KISSES was released, they'd already built a devoted following in their native Orange County, California, with their polished yet punishing brand of metalcore. An EP, FRACTURES IN THE FACADE OF YOUR PORCELAIN BEAUTY, had established the band's sonic blueprint, and Atreyu reworked three songs from the EP to place among the newer material on SUICIDE NOTES. The group's hallmarks-furiously churning riffs, double-bass thunder, and tortured screamo vocals-arrive fully formed here. Titles like "Living Each Day Like You're Already Dead" and "Someone's Standing On My Chest" suggest lead singer and lyricist Alex Vartkatzas's penchant for violent psychological anguish and anger, feelings reinforced by the brutal nature of the music. The singles "Ain't Love Grand" and "Lip Gloss and Black" are album highlights, not least for their melodic choruses sung by drummer Brandon Saller, but there isn't a weak track on the disc. Atreyu would go on to refine their unique sound, but this is the album that started it all, and it's still one of their best. Atreyu's debut album, Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses, is an invigorating foray into melodic metalcore in the vein of Darkest Hour, Poison the Well, and Eighteen Visions. Helmed by the tortured vision of frontman Alex Varkatzas, Atreyu looks to strike a name for themselves ...
