The first Metal Blade release from Ancient, a black metal combo fronted by Norwegian transplant Aphazel, The Canian Chronicle is a surprisingly mature and memorable collection of hellish invocations. Evil guitar riffs, frenetic drumming, demonic screeching, and orchestral backdrops place this squarely in the Scandinavian black metal tradition, but Ancient also displays an admirable penchant for exploration on longer excursions like the four-part title track and the eight-plus minute "Song of Kaiaphas." And despite the largely unnecessary presence of his utterly disposable and ridiculous henchmen (pictured in spooky cloaks and corpse make-up -- oooh, scary!), Aphazel himself is clearly not messing around. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia Ancient Cainian Chronical Songs Cainian Chronical Review

Cainian Chronical music CDs
$8.99 Sweden's Tiamat displayed an incredible learning curve in the year after their debut, resulting in 1991's excellent The Astral Sleep. Short synthesizer instrumentals ("Neon Aeon" and "The Seal") open and close the album, setting the stage for the band's new ability to incorporate background keyboard textures (often resembling angelic choirs) to even their most aggressive death metal. Vocalist Johan Edlund ...
| | Rotting Christ Thy Mighty Contract CD (1993)
Cainian Chronical songs
$9.85 After recording a handful of demos and releasing 1991's Passage to Arcturo EP in their native Greece, Rotting Christ launched their international career with a promising first long-player in 1993's Thy Mighty Contract. Originally released by France's Osmose, the album's production may have been somewhat subpar, and its songs slightly over-reliant on furious blastbeats, but none of this mattered a lick to hardcore extreme metal fans, who happily gorged on such tasty black metal entrails as "The Sign of Evil Existence" and "The Coronation of the Serpent." After all, even at the start of their storied career, Rotting Christ already showed a budding flair for melody on odes of sublime terror like "Transform All Suffering into Plagues," "Exiled Archangels," and "The Fourth Knight of Revelation" -- and how about those horribly evocative ...
| | Cradle Of Filth Principle Of Evil Made Flesh CD (1994) (Import) England; United Kingdom
Cainian Chronical album
$21.45 PRINCIPLE OF EVIL MADE FLESH is the 1994 debut from the influential British heavy metal act Cradle of Filth. "Iscariot," "One Final Graven Kiss," and "Of Mist and Midnight Skie" are here among others.
Cradle of Filth is most notorious for bringing respectability to the Norwegian black metal template, the band threatening to actually make the genre enjoyable, thanks to acceptable production values and an admirable songwriting ethic mostly absent among the early reptilian belchings croaked forth from dank Norse basements -- and Cradle is British to boot. Utilizing flowery classical flourishes, tangible melodies, nimble death/thrash riffing, a coherent -- albeit crushing -- rhythmic battery, and the deranged, multifaceted caterwaul of vocalist Dani Davey, The Principle of Evil Made Flesh brought a musical sensibility to the black metal table that was absent in early genre releases by Emperor, Enslaved, and Mayhem. Boasting a blatant goth influence -- i.e., lengthy keyboard intros, intermittent operatic female vocals, and Davey's black 'n' blood take on romantic poetry (in meter even!) -- and slightly tongue-in-cheek ...

Cainian Chronical CD music
$9.49 SIGN OF THE HAMMER, the eight track release from Manowar, features "Mountains" and "Oath."
After getting everything right on the previous year's Hail to England, Manowar rushed back into the studio to record 1985's Sign of the Hammer -- and it shows. Despite the return of Hail producer Jack Richardson, the album sounds noticeably flat when compared to its predecessor, seriously dulling the impact of promising cuts like "Thor (The Powerhead)" and "The Oath." Uneven songwriting is also ...
