(1 Customer Review)
THE AVENGER is Amon Amarth's second album for Metal Blade, and it features new guitarist Johan Söderberg in place of the departed Anders Hansson. It's not dissimilar to ONCE SENT FROM THE GOLDEN HALL -- basic Scandinavian death/black metal, somewhere in between the predominant flavors of the Norwegian and Swedish scenes, mixing lightning-quick rhythms and noisy guitar textures with deep, growling grooves. [A bonus disc version was also released.]
Recorded in March 1999.

| The Avenger Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) the Avenger Swedish Vikings continues their career with the Avenger, an album completely enshrouded by Norse mythology related themes, in addition to (of course) Vikings. The good thing about this album is its flexibility and the atmosphere. The songs are very different from each other, some are fast and heavy while others (especially the title song) is slow and moody. Somehow the Vikings manage to pull this off beautifully, because after listening to this for a while you actually begin to think about Vikings. As you close your eyes, you will find yourself surrounded by a horde of fighting Vikings, maybe onboard one of their dragon-headed ships or maybe in one of their villages. However, there is a certain amount of instability on this album. Since all the songs are so different, its difficult to be sure of what the Vikings want with this music. Although you will feel captured by songs like “the Last with Pagan Blood” and “Bleed for Ancient Gods”, there are some pieces here that never appear on any later Amon Amarth recording. This album clearly epitomizes the quality of singular songs, instead of the general sound of the album. Therefore, it does not give the astounding, breathtaking feeling one could have gotten out of something like this. But it’s still a great album, as it as something for everyone. | | Amon Amarth Crusher CD (2001)
The Avenger
$9.69 After nearly a decade of recording and a few lineup overhauls, each contributor to Amon Amarth's previous effort, Avenger, stuck around for The Crusher. Original members Johan Hegg (vocals) and Olavi Mikkonen (guitars) are again joined by Fredrik Andersson on drums, Johan Söderberg on guitar, and bassist Ted Lundström. There is nothing new on this outing to surprise fans of this band's familiar Scandinavian death metal. The riffing from guitar and drums is workmanlike, and Hegg's vocal rants carry all the requisite ferocity. During slower, more ...

| | Amon Amarth Fate Of Norns CD (2004)
The Avenger
$9.85 Amon Amarth's fifth full-length isn't so different than its 2002 predecessor, The Crusher. Musically, Fate of Norns is Spartan death metal built on epic, anthemic melodies, a perfect example of the Iron Maiden/death metal fusion tagged the "New Wave of Swedish Heavy Metal." And lyrically it's still full of Viking imagery, as songs like "Valkyries Ride" and "The Pursuit of Vikings" attest. It's the same theme that these guys have been hammering at since their 1996 debut mini-album, Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds. It's also a theme that literally hundreds of other Scandinavian bands have hammered at too, most of them leaving it a hackneyed corpse ready for the pyre. Which is where Amon Amarth have set themselves apart. These aren't just songs written about Vikings, they are written by Vikings. They're ready for ...

| | Doc Watson Songs From Home CD (2002) Remastered
The Avenger
$9.15 Recorded between 1972 & 1979. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott.
After stints on Folkways and Vanguard Records in the '60s and early '70s, Doc Watson contracted with the independent Poppy label, which earned a distribution deal with United Artists (UA) in the wake of the success of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's 1972 UA album Will the Circle Be Unbroken, on which Watson appeared. Having released Elementary Doctor Watson! on Poppy in 1972, followed by Then and Now in 1973 and Two Days in November in 1974 (all of these albums actually co-credited to Doc & Merle Watson), he next issued the double-LP Memories directly on UA in 1975, following with 1976's Doc and the Boys and then three more Doc & Merle albums, 1977's Lonesome Road, 1978's Look Away!, and 1979's Live and Pickin'. Four of those eight albums made the country charts, and one, Memories, even made the pop charts, but that was the end of Watson's sojourn with a large national label; by 1981, he was back to recording for the small folkie independent Flying Fish. This 49-minute, 17-track compilation draws on the Poppy/UA catalog, long since acquired by Capitol Records. Just as Watson's pact ...

The Avenger
$13.19 As the self-proclaimed inventors of "suicide rock," it's entirely fitting that Finland's Sentenced exercised complete control over their own demise, having the guts to end it all when they felt the time was right. This feat was carried out in calculating fashion by 2005's aptly named The Funeral Album, capping these Finnish metal ambassadors' impressive 16-year career in style, but apparently leaving just one more final act to be played out in the shape of 2006's live CD and DVD, Buried Alive. Recorded at the band's last show ever, in their hometown of Oulu, Buried Alive is comprised of 26 highlights culled from all of Sentenced's eight studio albums, which, for those who don't know, can easily be split into two distinct phases defined by two, very different singers: Taneli Jarva, who fronted the group during its early death metal years; and Ville Laihila, who held the reins throughout its more gothic, hard rock latter days. The fact that both of these singers were on hand to MC Sentenced's interment is undoubtedly Buried Alive's greatest attraction, as special guest Jarva leads the band through ancient nuggets like "The War Ain't Over," "The Way I Wanna Go," and the all-time death metal ...
