(10 Customer Reviews)
Prog metal veterans Fates Warning continue to evolve, picking up where A PLEASANT SHADE OF GRAY left off with their newest offering, DISCONNECTED. The disc is a conceptual piece presented in the spirit of APSOG, differing only in that there isn't a single weak moment here; which isn't to make light of the brilliant moments found on that previous album--DISCONNECTED simply drips with perfection.
Terry Brown's hand in the production is evident, and the album's contrasting movements have just the right balance of finesse and grit to translate well to a live setting. Bookended by instrumental pieces, the body of DISCONNECTED is a sonic rollercoaster of dynamics and extremes that never loses its center. Vocalist Ray Alder has seldom sounded so smooth and commanding while Neil Peart disciples will be salivating over Mark Zonder's awe-inspiring drumming. Bassist Joey Vera and keyboardist Kevin Moore both lend chops to the recording, while Fates Warning mastermind/guitarist Jim Matheos stands firmly at the helm of this prog metal masterpiece.
Recorded at Frankie's Hideaway, North Hollywood, California and Carriage House, Stamford, Connecticut between February 17 & April 16, 2000.

Disconnected album
$9.69 This was the recording that established Fates Warning as a progressive band. Their metal influences still dominate the group's overall sound; however, Mark Zonder's unique approach to drumming adds another level of depth and credibility to the music. His double bass, odd-time introduction to "Part of the Machine" is the session's defining moment, "Through Different Eyes" is a catchy song that provides insight into the band's future pop/metal direction, and "Static Acts" still stands as one of the most aggressive songs the band ever recorded. Ray Alder's aggressive singing has a genuine quality which allows him to legitimately convey his anger and pain without sounding clichéd. "A World Apart" is one of the weaker songs here; however, there is some impressive odd-metered drumming from Zonder. "At Fates Hands" has become one of the ...
| | Fates Warning Pleasant Shade Of Gray CD (1997)
Disconnected CD music
$9.69 Though they'd pretty much come to epitomize the very essence of progressive metal over the years with their ever-challenging work, Fates Warning had surprisingly never committed to a full-on concept album -- almost a prerequisite of the genre. That is, until 1997's ambitious A Pleasant Shade of Gray, which corrected this oversight with 12 tracks forming a single, Herculean magnum opus. But while it offers up another helping of rhythmically complex progressive metal full of intricately woven time changes, this is no Operation: Mindcrime. The guitar riffs and melodic hooks contained here are simply not that memorable, requiring way too many listens ...
| | Fates Warning Inside Out CD (1994) Reissue
Disconnected music CDs
$9.69 A decent follow-up to Parallels that at times exceeds it, but not as effective as a collective whole. Mark Zonder's drumming approach continues to impress and Jim Matheos' guitar arrangements have grown increasingly complex; however, the band seems to be struggling for a clear direction. An effort toward commercial success is evident; however, they are also attempting to satisfy their core ...

| | Porcupine Tree In Absentia CD (2002)
Disconnected album
$8.59 There's a breed of (post-1980s) bands with the same degree of grand rock experimentalism as Pink Floyd and Yes, who simultaneously adhere to the concept of concise songwriting. Porcupine Tree is one such band--their sound is a balance of lush ambient textures, charming vocal harmonies, rock & roll directness, and acoustically- and electronically-generated sounds. Their debut IN ABSENTIA shows all these elements in place, rich with the likely possibility of them becoming a contemporary counterpart to Pink Floyd.
Hailed by Billboard as 'cinematic...simple gorgeous', Porcupine Tree are unquestionably ...
| | Fates Warning FWX CD (2004)
Disconnected CD music
$10.49 FWX is a milestone for Fates Warning, marking 20 years since the band's debut, NIGHT ON BROCKEN. The album signals the end of one era, as departing drummer Mark Zonder's last with the group, and the beginning of another, as Fates make their first foray into producing their own records. While often compared to their prog-metal peers, Fates Warning are far less technical in their approach. What makes them progressive, and consistently sets them apart, ...
| | Andy Williams' Best/Under Paris Skies CD (2000)
Disconnected music CDs
$11.69 Collectables Records' two-fer reissue of the Andy Williams albums Andy Williams' Best (1962) and Under Paris Skies (1961) presents the best of the singer's early years in two different senses. Andy Williams' Best was Cadence Records' Williams greatest-hits LP, assembled from his biggest hit singles and recent singles releases after he departed for major label Columbia Records in 1961. It contains all seven of the Top Ten hits he scored on Cadence, 1956-1960, a stylistic mixture that includes lightly rocking numbers like "Butterfly" and "I Like Your Kind of Love" as well as the religious number "The Village of St. Bernadette" and the Hawaiian standard "The Hawaiian Wedding Song." The remaining five tracks consist of Williams' last three Cadence singles and two of their B-sides, none of them big hits, while some modest hits are missing, but this is still a good survey of Andy Williams the 1950s singles artist. By the end of his tenure at Cadence, Williams had evolved into an album-oriented balladeer, and Under Paris Skies, a concept album of French and French-oriented songs actually recorded in Paris, ...
