Arrangers: Hank Shermann; King Diamond. After an almost decade-long hiatus, Mercyful Fate's reunion did not disappoint; it was as if they picked up right where they had left off. There are more of King Diamond's gothic tales of horror and the supernatural, and the music sounds better than ever. It doesn't have the historical significance of their early-'80s material, but that doesn't really matter; this is high-quality material from a tight veteran band. The CD features a re-recorded version of the underground classic "Return of the Vampire" with Lars Ulrich on drums. ~ Steve Huey The first album from the reunited Mercyful Fate (with studio drummer Morton Nielsen replacing Kim Ruzz), IN THE SHADOWS adopts the stripped-down sound and progressive songwriting of the group's debut MELISSA. There's even a harpsichord-laced sequel to that album's title track, called "Is That You, Melissa." Despite the passage of eight years, vocalist King Diamond, guitarists Michael Denner and Hank Shermann, and bassist Timi Hansen recapture the same spark that made their first two albums classics in the metal realm. While the atmosphere is not as malevolent as that of their previous release DON'T BREAK THE OATH, Diamond's lyrics and performances are less cartoonish than before, and these songs generally feature the memorable hooks that are one of the group's trademarks. The last track, a re-recording of long-lost chestnut "Return Of the Vampire," features Metallica's Lars Ulrich on drums. It may not be as classic as their first two releases, but IN THE SHADOWS is a strong addition to the Mercyful Fate oeuvre. Mercyful Fate In The Shadows Songs | 1. | Egypt |

| In The Shadows Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) still good stuff all the hallmark fate stuff is here-good riffs and leads, king's wicked vocals, mini-horror stories for lyrics/songs. egypt, the first track, is one of my favorite MF tunes, its got some awesome twin guitar melody and kings vox and lyrics are just as menacing as curse of the pharoahs from melissa. one thing to notice though is the absence of the outright satanism that MF was known for, not saying that this album is lacking a dark atmosphere-there is plenty of that. overall a very impressive comeback. Hard Hitting CD In The Shadows has got to be one of the hardest heavey hitting Mercyful Fate albums to date, with songs like... Egypt, Legend Of The Headless Rider, and The Bell Witch, you can not go wrong! Buy this cd, you will not be sorry ! Submitted by Altan (Columbus, Ohio, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
An amazing reunion!!! Although not as good as their releses of the 80's, Mercyful Fate made an awsome comeback in the 90's with this album which is prbobly their best after the reunion. It is the closest to their classix "Melissa" and "Don't Break The Oath". My favorite tracks on the album are "Egypt", "The Bell Witch", "Shadows", and "Is That You, Melissa?" The rest of the tracks are also great but they don't compare to the previous releses. I really wish Mercyful Fate would at LEAST go back to the sound of this album instead of disappointing their fans with albums like "9". Well anyway, i'll always be a die-hard fan of Mercyful Fate. It's somewhat odd that the reunited Mercyful Fate has now recorded more prolifically than the original group did in their classic early-'80s period, especially since there seems to be a personnel shift with nearly every '90s album. Their fifth ...

Audio Mixer: David Z. . Recording information: American Recorders. Photographer: Randee Saint Nicholas. John Mayall, 69 years of age at the time of this recording, is at the very least irrepressible. He and his many versions of the Bluesbreakers have hit the road every year for decades, and the five years leading up to the release of Stories offer a flurry of activity that hasn't been seen from him since the 1970s. The Bluesbreakers lineup here has been with him since Spinning Coin, and includes Joe Yuele on drums, guitarist Buddy Whittington, Hank Van Sickle on bass, and Tom Canning on keyboards. Like the young hip-hop kids who self reference ubiquitously, Mayall writes more songs about blues music or playing the blues than virtually any musician in history, and Stories seems to be a series of narrative songs that are, for the most part, about various ...
