Wa-Chic-Ka-Nocka is yet another installment in Buffalo Bop's long line of collections that compile obscure, usually independent-label rockabilly and rock & roll recordings of the '50s mastered directly from original 45s. The theme this time is music about Native Americans, or "Indians," as the era dictated. The songs are filled with ridiculous stereotypes and sometimes cringe-inducing insensitivity, but were recorded in the spirit of fun rather than hostility, for what that's worth. The package is interesting in that it shows the influence of Hollywood Westerns, television, and Western comic books on popular music, and also the unselfconsciousness and ease with which songwriters could tap into this particular formula. And it is definitely a formula -- tom tom drums and war whoops are nearly ubiquitous, and there is a certain guitar riff that gets recycled endlessly. A number of instrumentals with thematically appropriate titles are included, as well as a couple of R&B numbers. Wa-Chic-Ka-Nocka is one of the strongest, if most politically incorrect, packages released by Buffalo Bop in terms of novelty and historical value. ~ Greg Adams

Wa-Chic-Ka-Nocka album
$11.18 It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat of a disciple of Slowhand, but he shows an unusual interest in the big AOR stylings of Journeyman, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan's In Step, creating ...

Wa-Chic-Ka-Nocka CD music
$19.34 It's a commonly held opinion among fans and band alike that Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' lone live album, 1986's Pack Up the Plantation, didn't quite capture the group at its peak, so there has been a long-standing need for another live set, which 2009's Live Anthology finally provides. Like its closest cousin, Bruce Springsteen's Live 1975-1985, Live Anthology almost overcompensates for the long wait by offering ...

Wa-Chic-Ka-Nocka music CDs
$6.05 The title of CEMA Special Markets' The Best of the Babys shouldn't be taken too literally. Yes, the budget-priced collection does contain almost all of their hits -- "Silver Dreams," "Every Time I Think of You," "Back on My Feet Again," "Midnight Rendezvous," "Turn and Walk Away" -- but inexplicably bypasses their highest-charting single, "Isn't It Time." Actually, that may be explicable: if all the big tunes were on a budget-line compilation, there would be no reason for many casual fans to purchase the fully formed Anthology. This leaves The Best of the Babys ...

This newly remastered 2003 deluxe edition contains bonus tracks.
Originally released on RCA Victor (4058). Includes liner notes by Jeff Tamarkin and Bill Thompson.
CROWN OF CREATION is a rich and varied collection showing off the different talents of the main songwriters. Among the many memorable moments are Grace Slick's beautiful vocal on "Lather," the band's sensitive cover version of David Crosby's "Triad," and Jorma Kaukonen's stunning wah-wah solo on "If You Feel." Add to this the intense lyrics (such as the drug-themed "Greasy Heart"), Marty Balin and Paul Kantner's consistently strong vocals throughout, and Jack Casady's remarkable dexterity on bass. This is most certainly the Airplane's REVOLVER.
The group's fourth album, appearing ten months following After Bathing at Baxter's, isn't the same kind of leap forward that Baxter's represented from Surrealistic Pillow. Indeed, in many ways Crown of Creation is a more stylistically ...
