Buffalo Bop may occasionally slip some uneven rock & roll songs into its other collections, but when it comes to Strictly Instrumental, they've come up with 30 solid tracks, running the gamut of influences from country/rockabilly (the Big Four) and blues (Rex Qual) to Chuck Berry licks (Howie & the Crystals, the Sensations) and surf (the Ree-Gents). Not all of the bands present have distinctive characters, although a few are more accomplished than the others -- "Ce'NY" by Jerry and the Silvertones, "Rockin' Hall" by Howie & the Crystals, "Workout" by the Journeymen (whose drummer sounds like Keith Moon on speed), and "Devil's Run" by Herb Kliebe's Nervous Kats show off players who obviously put in time and effort, and had the talent to make it show on record, and Rex Qual's "Tranquilizer Boogie" is distinctive as a blues-based instrumental in the midst of these surf and rock & roll sounds. The Eltro-Tones ("Ghost Train"), despite their name, are a country outfit with a heavy reliance on steel guitar, and are also among the truth virtuoso groups in this collection. Some of the bands rely on sax as much as guitar, but the axe is the main instrument on 85% of this collection. Strictly speaking, a few aren't really instrumentals -- "Bandstand Rocket" by the Twisters and "Chicken Rock" by Scott Wood certainly have voices, even if all they're doing is providing non-descript choruses. Most of these bands probably never to play much beyond the counties in which they went to school and got together, and these singles are as close to immortality as most of them ever got. Still, they rose to the occasion, turning out two minutes each of generally exciting, often bracing instrumental flash. ~ Bruce Eder

$20.79 Compared with Buffalo Bop's usual rockabilly and teen-rebel collections, this 33-song compilation is kind of dorky -- sort of a nerd's picture of rock & roll (the Richie Cunningham as opposed to the Fonzie playlist). Nobody appearing on this CD ever aspired to be really cool like Elvis or Gene Vincent; Ricky Nelson was as far as they got. But it's all great fun in its well-crafted, highly produced way, and some of the artists and labels here will actually be familiar--Tony Orlando ("The Loneliest"), Steve Lawrence ("Pretty Blue Eyes"), Milo Liggett ("Gold and Silver"), and the Barker Brothers ("Hey Little Mama") recorded for outfits like Monument, Epic, Brunswick, ABC, and Hickory. The Wonders ("Cuttin' Out"), the R-Dells ("You Say"), David Box ("Little Lonely Summer Girl") et al weren't rebels, they were would-be teen idols, and they weren't averse to delivering songs that were essentially teen-pop, albeit often ...

Strictly Instrumental music CDs
$17.79 The second volume of Buffalo Bop's rock 'n roll instrumental series is close in quality to its predecessors, although a few outfits, such as the Rockin' Continentals ("2-3-4") overstay their welcome by 45 seconds or so. The Sounds ("Bedlam") demonstrate a rich virtuosity on their guitars, while Lord Dent & His Invaders mix guitars and saxes to go effect on "Wolf Call," and The Casuals combine piano and rhythm guitar. "The Viking Twist" may sound like a dumb title, especially coming from a band called The Vi-Kings, but it does move, and has some very animated saxohone. "Roulette Rock" by the Variatones starts off dangerously similar to "Kansas ...

This is a pretty uneven collection, which is not surprising given the fact that the title track by Reggie Perkins is one of the coolest things here and it's from a juvenile delinquency B-movie of the same name. The Jays' "Panic Stricken" is pretty fair rock & roll, but "Jitterbug Joe" is one of those minor embarrassments of the genre, a silly novelty tune. Ronnie Allen's "High School Love" sets the middle-range here, a pleasant, serviceable but undistinguished piece of rock & roll that doesn't quite come off, missing the cues ...

$8.55 Reach the Sky's Open Roads and Broken Dreams was originally released in the late '90s, and helped thrust the band to the front of the hardcore punk scene. Their energetic mixture of frantic punk speed with an aggressive hardcore attitude would be less effective if it weren't for the passion and sincerity injected into ...
