One of the duo's best acoustic folk-blues collaborations, originally issued in 1958. They convincingly run through a very enjoyable series of collaborations marked by affectionate interplay, with drummer Gene Moore adding rhythmic power. ~ Bill Dahl

| | Curtis Mayfield Curtis CD (1970) Deluxe Edition
Sing music CDs
$7.39 CURTIS is the first solo album by R&B/soul legend Curtis Mayfield. After leaving the Impressions, Mayfield began to write lyrics that were more politically charged. With the 1970 release of CURTIS, he became one of the most important socially conscious artists of his generation. The album's opener, "(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Below We're All Going to Go" uses racial epithets openly, as Mayfield asserts the shiftlessness of America. Set to a funky groove, with smart ...

Sing songs
$12.59 Seven years after the duo's inception, Suicide's debut album finally sneaked out in 1977 on the coat tails of the nascent New York punk scene. If its aim had been to confuse, startle, or repulse, SUICIDE succeeded in spades. By the same token, if a part-time ...

Sing music CDs
$16.65 BLUES GUITAR MAGIC was compiled by Ray Topping and features 4 previously unreleased tracks.
As a companion volume to The Modern Legacy Vol. 1 (also on Ace), this wraps up the label's comprehensive overview of Crayton's stint with Modern Records. With material from the end of the 1940s and the early '50s, about half of the 25-track CD was drawn from 1949-52 singles, filled out by LP cuts and four previously unreleased items. This might not be quite as good as volume one, recycling some of the same ideas a few times (something, of course, found on many blues albums). But it's in the same league, showing Crayton to be a capable and often exciting performer in both the uptempo and ballad styles, and on both vocal and instrumental tracks. The highlights, naturally, are the guitar solos, as fiery and innovative as any being done in blues and R&B at the time, even if Crayton has not received the wide recognition ...

$11.69 George Thorogood's first album for a major label became his commercial breakthrough precisely because it was business as usual. Again, it's a brash, rowdy take on the blues that owes as much to '60s garage bands and punk as it does to Muddy Waters. That connection is made particularly explicit here via a stomping take on the Human Beinz' '60s punk classic "Nobody But Me," itself a radical deconstruction of the Isely Brothers' original.
The title tune, of course, has become Hollywood's leading signifier of a character's toughness--pretty funny if you've ever seen the transparently goofy Thorogood mugging his way through the song on MTV. Elsewhere on the album, ...
| | Youngers Heritage CD (2008)
Sing album
$12.49 The road to Hell, as we all know, is paved with good intentions, and it seems that the Youngers have taken a long drive down that very same path. The group's second album, Heritage, is an unusually earnest set of roots rock and alt country, filled with tales of bad luck and lives on the line, and the music has been given the endorsement of John Carter Cash, son of the Man in Black himself, who produced the sessions, as well musicians who've backed up Del McCoury and Waylon Jennings and pop up here as special guests. Given that folks who should know have given this band the nod, it's more than a little disappointing to report that the best moments on Heritage sound like a slower and less exciting version of the Bottle Rockets, dwelling on enough thematic archetypes to make most of these songs sound as if they've been assembled from clichés left over by Jay Farrar, Bruce Springsteen, and Patterson Hood. (The Youngers' Springsteen fetish reaches its height on "Middle of the Night," which not only borrows more than a bit of style and wordplay from The Boss but features a sub-Clarence Clemons sax part played by some session musician who wisely remains nameless.) The group's songwriters, Todd Bartolo and Randy Krater, are clearly talented and aren't afraid to say what they mean in the 13 songs on Heritage, but their sincerity also makes this album's flaws ...
