| | Lucinda Williams Ramblin CD Lucinda Williams Discography of CDs
Originally released on Folkways Records in 1978, Lucinda Williams' debut album consists of nothing but acoustic country blues in the tradition of the Louisiana Delta where the singer/songwriter was raised. Not that Williams had the blues' traditional impoverished upbringing-her father is an academic and a well-regarded poet. RAMBLIN' works, however, because of Williams' obvious mastery of the country blues form and her already impressive instrumental and vocal skills.
Williams' voice and 12-string guitar are almost the album's only features, with second guitarist John Grimaudo adding unobtrusive accompaniment to a handful of tracks. Williams' taste runs to the obscure here. Of these 14 songs, the most familiar to those who aren't blues historians are Hank Williams' "Jambalaya (On the Bayou)" and the gospel mainstay "Great Speckled Bird." The rest are blues classics of varying degrees of obscurity, with no original songs but plenty of passion and soul. An excellent traditional country blues album.

Ramblin album
$5.99 After releasing two traditional country blues albums in 1978 and 1980 and a more experimental and pop-oriented album in 1989, Louisiana-born singer/songwriter Lucinda Williams regrouped following the dissolution of the label to which she had been signed and released 1992's stunning SWEET OLD WORLD. While Williams' country blues roots are in evidence throughout the album, the ...

CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Can't Let Go" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Williams's fans waited a long six years for this album, as Lucinda went through music business hassles and a revolving door of producers. The reward for their patience is an album full of rootsy, heartfelt observations that alternately rock and mourn. CAR WHEELS is full of songs about loss and longing, like "Metal Firecracker," "Drunken Angel" and "I Lost It," but even when she's bemoaning her own lack of happiness on the bluesy "Joy," she lets loose with so much passion that it seems inevitable she'll find her emotional center again.
Produced largely by Steve Earle, CAR WHEELS is immersed in that ...

$12.29 "Get Right With God" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
The follow-up to Lucinda Williams's commercial/critical breakthrough CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD is anything but a market-geared, commercial effort. Rather, ESSENCE is the sound of lovelorn melancholy being delicately bottled, then gently let loose in a recording studio with a group of skilled roots-rockers to ease it along on its way to the microphone. The tender beauty of these heart-on-sleeve tunes goes hand in hand with the overwhelming, unapologetic misery of the sentiments expressed in the lyrics. As always, Williams displays her gift for getting the maximum poetic mileage out of the simplest verbal structures. The simply rendered images of heartbreak ...

Ramblin album
$11.99 WORLD WITHOUT TEARS was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Righteously" was nominated for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Though it's ultimately a less balladic, more stylistically varied album than its dreamy predecessor ESSENCE, WORLD WITHOUT TEARS starts out with a slow-burning, reverb-drenched ballad, but then takes a sharp turn into sensual lyricism, pounding drums, and churning guitar on "Righteously." For some time, the dominant topic of Lucinda Williams albums has been the edgy appeal of dangerous, often doomed men, and true to form there are plenty of those on WORLD WITHOUT TEARS. Witness the tragic anti-hero of "Real Live Bleeding Fingers and Broken Guitar Strings," the troubled ...
