SOUTHERN BANJO SONGS was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album.
Mike Seeger has spent the better part of 50 years unearthing and performing traditional American music. A former trustee of the Newport Folk Festival--as well as the son of renowned musicologist Charles and half brother to folk music icon Pete, Seeger is one of the nation's leaders in the performance and history of the banjo. Given the difficulty of presenting an exhaustive labor of scholarship and music and still making it interesting for the lay listener, SOUTHERN BANJO SONGS is a marvel. Rather than dissolving into dull study of an increasingly archaic instrument, SOUTHERN BANJO SONGS is an energetic, rigorous and ultimately fascinating exploration into the myriad of American banjo sounds and styles.
Musically, Seeger is plowing well-worn territory here, covering beyond-chestnuts like "Jim Crack Corn," "Flop Eared Mule," and "Wabash Blues." But SOUTHERN BANJO SONGS will appeal to any serious banjo player or folk music listener. Additionally, the excellent package design and Seeger-penned commentary behind each song is impressive and educational.

Southern Banjo Songs
$13.59 LIVE RECORDINGS (1956-1969)...VOL. 1 is a collection of 27 previously unreleased live tracks by Bill Monroe & The Blue Grass Boys.
The Smithsonian Folkways label is justly famous for the quality of its releases, and LIVE RECORDINGS is certainly among the most valuable of its '90s productions. The disc contains 27 previously unreleased recordings of Bill Monroe and his band during their peak period as both creative artists and performers. Drawn from various main stage performances, festival workshops, and jam sessions, LIVE RECORDINGS presents bluegrass' finest artist in the most favorable light possible: that is, in live performance.
Nearly half these tracks derive from two 1956 performances, both of which catch Monroe and his band in top form. Whether powering their way through "Blue Grass Stomp" or harmonizing sweetly on "I'm Working ...
| | Dock Boggs His Folkways Years 1963-1968 CDs (1998) 1963-68
Southern Banjo Songs
$22.25 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
After Boggs, the Appalachian singer/banjoist who had released a dozen sides in the late '20s, was rediscovered by Mike Seeger in 1963, he did some recording for Folkways Records. This double-CD, 50-song set contains the material from three Boggs LPs for Folkways: Legendary Singer & Banjo Player (1963), Vol. 2 (1965), and Vol. 3 (1970). The unearthly qualities of his '20s recordings that caused critics such as Greil Marcus to get wet were not in such exotic force on these later efforts; Boggs had only recently started playing music again after a gap of about 30 years. He's in fairly good form on this extensive compilation, dominated by old folk and ...

| | Randy Scruggs Crown Of Jewels CD (1998)
Southern Banjo Songs
$6.09 "A Soldier's Joy" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Country Instrumental Performance. "Lonesome Ruben" was nominated for the same award.
CROWN OF JEWELS is aptly named--every track is a gem. Randy Scruggs, son of legendary banjo player Earl Scruggs, is a top songwriter, producer and instrumentalist who's worked with, well, everyone. For CROWN OF JEWELS, he called in favors right and left to assemble an all-star cast, and they've created what sounds like the world's hippest country/rock mix tape.
Guests include Trisha Yearwood, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Vince Gill, Travis Tritt, Rosanne Cash, Bruce Hornsby, Joan Osborne and John Prine. Much of the material is brand new, but even old chestnuts like "Amie" and "Wildwood Flower" get new spins--the latter song is the first recorded duet between Emmylou Harris and Iris Dement, for example. A definite highlight is the Dylanesque rocker "Passin' Through," a duet between Scruggs and Osborne. But CROWN OF JEWELS truly shines on the instrumental tracks ("Travel On," "A Soldier's Joy"), which feature players whose sheer virtuosity will have your jaw dropping in amazement.
