Although Ella Jenkins' records were in large part intended for educational use, collections such as this one also endure as strong folk music on its own merits. Frequently accompanied by the Goodwill Spiritual Choir of the Monumental Baptist Church in Chicago, these are strong and committed renditions of African-American folk songs. Plenty of these tunes are well known by both folk fans and the general public, and plenty of listeners may well have heard "Wade in the Water" (the album's standout), "Old Time Religion," "Hammer Song," and "Cotton-Eyed Joe" for the first time here. While the call-and-response interplay between Jenkins and the choir is good, she could also be effective on solo numbers like "Who's Gonna Be Your Man?," on which the only backing to her voice is supplied by minimal percussion that sounds like a stick and hollow drum being tapped. There's also a version of "No More Auction Block," sung by Bob Dylan in the early '60s (although he may have learned it from Odetta's rendition); its melody was adapted for Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind." ~ Richie Unterberger

African American Folk Rhythms
$9.25 Issued exclusively by Walmart in 2009, this SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS collection draws tunes from the wacky yellow cartoon character's previous musical outings, including silly classics such as "The Best Day Ever" and "Campfire Song Song." Other highlights include the entertainingly melancholy "Gary's Song," and, of course, the zippy "SpongeBob SquarePants Theme Song."
Absorbent and yellow and porous is he! Unless listeners have been living under the sea themselves, they know Spongebob Squarepants is one of the most popular cartoon characters on TV, and part of the charm of the show are the goofy and irreverent songs on the soundtrack. ...

African American Folk Rhythms
$9.55 The band name and album graphics, along with song titles like "Evil Robots" and "I Saw You on TV," give the impression that this Orange County foursome are part of the new wave/synth pop revival. However, while there are some surface affinities to the likes of the Epoxies or the Catch, Epsilons are, at heart, a garagey punk rock affair. Think Cramps or Pink Flag-era Wire, not Devo. Singer Ty Segall has an appealingly bratty whine of a voice that's equally well-showcased on lo-fi noise blasts like "Pantyhose" and marginally poppier Nuggets-style ...
