| | Smithsonian Folkways Children's Music Collection CD
There are over 200 children's recordings in the Folkways catalog. This is not just a smart collection of 26 of the best items from that body of work; it's also folk music that adults might actually listen to for pleasure, at least for part of the time. There are kids' songs, or at least songs that are fun for kids to sing, from such folk giants as Leadbelly, Pete Seeger, Cisco Houston, and Woody Guthrie; Guthrie's "Riding in My Car (Car Song)" is a particular hoot. But there are also tracks from far lesser-known performers, such as children's music specialist Ella Jenkins, and, most importantly, a smattering of cuts from singers of several different continents. There's calypso from Lord Invader, African folk from W.K. Amoaku, Yiddish folk from Ruth Rubin, and selections from Puerto Rican and Mexican artists, not to mention poems by Langston Hughes. It's a fine way to help give kids a multicultural musical grounding without being doctrinaire in the least. ~ Richie Unterberger

Smithsonian Folkways Children's Music Collection CD music
$17.09 ARTIST PROFILEThere are only a handful of artists that are superb in their ability to sing a song. Without a doubt, Joe Croyle is that kind of singer. The complex yet easy style, which is clearly his own, leads you down the path of vocal range and precision that makes it a joy to listen to. Although gifted in many other styles of singing, Joe has chosen jazz because of the inner connection he feels when he sings. Vocally dynamic, his song stylings are reminiscent of the late great Mel Torme`, and his use of breath control and phrasing is unsurpassed. Being born in the Pittsburgh area, Joe's father was a member of a famous barbershop quartet. They would rehearse for hours in Joe's livingroom and he would bask in the sound of that close four part harmony. He took piano and trumpet lessons in his formative years in grade school and high school, and played and sang in a jazz band for private parties at the age of 15.Joe's relationship with jazz is very unique. Being a studio singer early on, he got top level training in some of the best studios in Los Angeles, and worked with great singers and arrangers in all of those areas. ...
