Miserere
$12.59 In the late 1980s and throughout the '90s, Zucchero (a.k.a. Adelmo Fornaciari) was one of the biggest musical stars in Italy, thanks to his fine songwriting and powerful, emotive singing. THE BEST OF ZUCCHERO provides a fine overview of the singer-songwriter's career, and includes his biggest hits as well as unreleased tracks. Though he is sometimes compared to countryman Andrea Bocelli, Zucchero has more of a rock-&-roll edge to his singing and composing, bringing a happy and sometimes propulsive energy to his take on adult contemporary pop.
Zucchero also broadens his appeal by singing in both Italian and English, and both are equally affecting, thanks to his rough-hewn, though quite lyrical voice (which bears a resemblance, at times, to Peter Gabriel's). Whether on atmospheric mid-tempo tracks ("Eppure Non T'amo"), surging ballads ("Senza Una Donna"), or uptempo rockers ("Diavolo In Me"), Zucchero has something for everyone, and BEST OF is the best place to sample his talents.

Miserere
$15.98 Unlike its 2002 predecessor Back in the U.S., Good Evening New York City doesn't cherrypick highlights from a tour, it commemorates a specific event: the inauguration of Citi Field -- the replacement for the now-defunct Shea Stadium, where the Beatles played a legendary show in 1965 -- in the summer of 2009. The circumstances may be different -- different enough to lead to a Billy Joel cameo on "I Saw Her Standing There," the piano man returning a favor from Paul, who played at Billy's Shea-closing shows in 2008 -- and McCartney might have two strong albums of new material to draw upon, but as an album, Good Evening New York City plays a lot like Back in the U.S. with a whopping 17 of its 35 tracks shared between the two titles. More importantly, the vibe is the same, with Macca delivering an expertly balanced and sequenced set with all the skill of the old pro that he is. Apart from the inclusion of "Mrs. Vanderbilt" and "I'm Down," there are no surprises, either in song selection or performance, but no surprises doesn't mean no satisfaction, and this is plenty entertaining

| | Emma Shapplin Carmine Meo CD (1997)
Miserere
$10.49 CARMINE MEO is a pop-classical hybrid by opera singer Emma Shapplin.
Every year or two somebody from the classical world gets the bright idea to record a classical album with a little something extra for the groundlings: some percussion, some sound effects, maybe some strings. Sometimes the result is insulting, sometimes it's just gilding the lily, and sometimes it works. Carmine Meo, however, sidesteps this problematic phenomenon altogether by making up its own classical music and then turning it into pop. That's right, most of the numbers on the album, even though they sound like lush, romantic arias, are originals.
And despite the disheveled-hair packaging of Emma Shapplin and the truly bad poem she contributes to the liner notes, it works. Why? Because Shapplin, notwithstanding her less-than-opera-caliber voice, sings with absolute conviction, and because her team is determined to entertain. So what if "Cuor Senza Sange" borrows its opening from Peter Gabriel, or if the synthesizer from "Favola Breve" is right off of Who's Next? None of that matters because "Spente le Stelle" truly reaches for the stars, and so do many of the other tracks. To be sure, the classical music aficionado is going to hear this album as slightly "off" in much the same way that "Adiemus," ...

Miserere
$13.85 Although Dance Hits Salsa, Vol. 3 doesn't have all the big names that its predecessors did, especially the star-laden Vol. 1, it still includes a lot of great music within the 14 tracks. Héctor Lavoe, Tito Puente (here with singer Camilo Azuquita), the Fania All-Stars (which is particularly fitting being that Protel now owns the rights to the Fania label), Willie Colón and Rubén Blades, and Orchestra Harlow are all featured artists on the compilation, mixed between lesser-known names like Sociedad 76 (the only ones with two songs), Tito Allen, Julio Castro & Orquesta Masacre, and Orchesta Bronco. Allen particularly has a great, smooth and expressive voice that works nicely ...
